Either you have a kink in the speedo cable or your speedo meter is on the way out
How long has it been doing that?
If you know anyone or have access to change the speeo cluster over, change it and see if it behaves the same way, if it does, it's the speedo cable...
Cheers.

Almost certainly a dodgy cable. Get a new one made or take a gamble with a second-hand one.

On the way back from home on Saturday my speedo needle was bouncing around a little. Then the cable snapped and the needle dropped to zero
Given that the car is 32 years old I thought my only option would be to chase one down at a wreckers.

Where would you have a new cable made? I assume you give them your old one so they can use the threaded end caps etc.
Some info would be smarvelous

i tried a few places for cables and i dont think they are readily avaliable commercially. wreckers probably best bet.
