What does "2 or 4 or 6 Bolt Mains" mean?
I've been curious for AGES and can't find out!
I'm sure its a silly question, but nonetheless.

Oh, is that all ? The number of bolts that hold the cap that holds the bearing that holds the crankshaft?
So why is it such a big deal that the 1uz has 6 of them, when american v8's have 2 ?
Isn't that just pointless overkill, or do they *really* fail occasionally and let go of the cap?

Anything alloy and powerful would self destruct with less than 6 bolt mains.
Cast Iron tends to be a tad stronger so 2 bolts is enough.

And the bolts that come in from the sump give it a bit more strenght in the block as they are all tied together.

Ok thanks for the explanations.
On a sidenote, using a 1uz in a boat would be a bad thing, right, wouldn't the alloy rust away in no time, since to cool boat engines you pump river water through the water cooled headers and then straight through the block.

Really? I always heard that you couldn't put alloy heads on boat v8's because they'd rust away in no time. ??

Plenty of people are now using the 1UZ in Marine applications.
Toyota actually developed a Marine 1UZ.
How they do it, I don't know as I haven't looked.
But nothing seems to happen to aluminium dinghies does it?

toyota seem to have a very high quality alloy compared to some companies {ford for example}{as i have found anyway}
u can also get 4 bolt splayed mains on your ford and chev motors, what that means that u have 2 main bolts that run vertical and 2 that run at about a 30 deg angle, stops the caps from walking
look here

I think 4 and 6-bolt mains are common in Alloy-block engines because aluminium alloys are a lot softer than Cast Iron, and far more prone to thermal expansion.
Both bad things when you're trying to locate crankshaft bearings accurately.

That's because you're thinking about putting alloy heads on an iron block. This ends up with dielectric corosion of. If the whole water path is alloy or you add something like a magnesium sacraficial anode I see no reason for corrosion problems.

or u run the cooling system on a internal circuit with coolant and only have the radiator exposed to the river water.

There's a certain combination you can't install copper gaskets in (mainly head-gaskets I think) as it corrodes aluminium very badly in some circumstances. I think it may be iron block / alloy head(s) . .
