Well if you grab another motor what is to say that the motor you get is not worse than you already have. Pull the head off do the gasket if you have the time have the machined the face or check it for flatness. Also how much boost are you running?

Or perhaps the HG was just on its way out? Can't expect every engine to last forever... look at Mr 1JZ's motor, it's blown a headgasket stock... and theyre reportedly bulletproof as well!

Ahh depends how mechanically minded you are. A pen pusher with no practical experience i would say hard but if you like getting your hands dirty give it a go but anything that I touch I like having a manual beside me for various reasons. Me i'm a 18rg freak so I have no Idea how hard it would be but like i said a manual is a very good guide.

It takes a bit...you have to take off the turbos and exhaust, your inlet manifold...cams, injector rail(ezy)about the hardest part is the inlet manifold, well was in my case cause of the bottom tree bolts. Also i found that re-aligning those damn cam gears again...I just done mien about 6 moths ago....i also replaced my valve stems seals while i had the head milled flat.

Fix the engine - no point in buying another import motor which will just have the same issues 6 months down the track... might even save a few $'s in the long run if you play your cards right!

There is no need too pull the motor out as you are only after the top end and there is plenty of room....why go to the trouble of ubolting the bellhousing and everything else???

toyota, trade price on a new gasket for a 1GGTE is about $85, if you want to go the whole hog with a thicker copper gasket and o rings, ridgecrest charge about $200 for all of that, personally i would go for the copper gasket as it can be made in any thickness

When using a copper headgasket you wanna make sure both surfaces are VERY flat!

all depends, when I was going to do the build up on my 1GGTE I was going to be running about 25 pounds of boost from GTR turbos and I was going to go for a 1.6mm gasket, for stock turbos i would go thicker than 1.2mm.

I wouldn't be changing the thickness of the headgasket. It's a dodgy way of changing compression. Lower your boost aspirations to a point where the turbos are efficient and/or improve your tuning.
