locker diff Tue, 31 May 2005 20:18 Go to next message
is the standard locker diff on a sprinter strong?

or it just as strong as a standard diff?

or it depending on how good is the welding?

how different is the a locker diff to drive compare to a LSD?
it just really a cheaper temporary option do i can get my car on the track sooner.

the last question is.

will it drift?

It's not the diff you have to worry about, it's the puny axles which will almost certainly snap when you put that much stress on them.

A locked diff is very different to drive compared to a proper LSD or open diff. You'll find it will want to understeer all the time until you step on the go pedal, and then it will massively oversteer. Yes, it will drift.

Definitely not recommended for the street, but OK for track use. It certainly will be temporary though, especially if you have a decent amount of power.

I've written about my experiences with a locked diff numerous times. Search to find them.

Basically I agree with Norbie, though even on the gas there are ocassions where it'll still understeer, especially in the wet.

well its still a standard diff isnt it, just less moving parts now the parts are welded (planetry gears) and its now straining to do sharp turns because its not a differential anymore, the system is more stressed.

it is a standard diff, less moving parts, well the slightly more breakable parts are welded but this is negilible really.

well no, the weld holds or it breaks, its fantastic or crap, no in between.

you need to learn how a differential works, then how the various lsd's work, its a lot of information. www.howstuffworks.com, google.

have fun doing three point turns....... and that inside wheel skipping yay. Laughing if the diff is welded properly it should not break like norbie said its the axles that will give way and if u just strip the splines usually one will go b4 the other it will be only putting drive to one wheel and depending how much power u have u could be smoking em up in 4th gear in the dry, suprises some ppl when u r spinning em up doing 80kmph in a car with not much power.

yes, a weld will either hold or break, what differs is the force it take to break the weld, so, technically, although there is no "in between" no two diffs are the same.

if the weld completely covers the spider gears and properly locks them, then yes, this will be strong, however,

if the person your getting to do it only does a weld slightly bigger than a tac weld, no shit its going to take less force to break.

just remember, this whole drive train is as strong as its weakest part,

meaning, usually this is the axles before the weld,

even the "EXPLICT" WRX snapped an axle at drag combat recently here in Perth.

although that is 4wd..

the end result was, even a car with that much money spent on it can break, badly.
