Mixing Auto Tranny Fluid Thu, 02 June 2005 01:30 Go to next message
We are about to change the tranny fluid on my dads Prado.
Its a '98 model, and I presume its running Dexron 3 (good assumption? whatever it had from factory anyway, A340F I think)

Anyhoo, we are going to put Type IV in it.
Is it ok to mix Dexron 3 and Type IV?
Obivously we are going to drain the pan, fill it up, drive for a bit, repeat until we run out of fluid.

How much should I buy? 8L? 12L?
When should I put the new filter on? On the last change or the first?

We don't mind doing this, but would we be better off to get an auto transmission place to do it for us?

Ok, done some digging for those interested.

If the Dipstick/sump plug says DII or DIII use Dexron 3.
If it says TII, TIII or TIV, use Type IV.

Don't put Type IV in a tranny that wants Dexron 3.

Simple!

As for flushing it, drain the pan, fill up, drive.
Repeat until drain is clean.
Then clean catch tray, drain pan, drop pan, change filter, reinstall pan, replace fluid from catch tray.

Simple!
