Dilema.....Job Wise Thu, 02 June 2005 21:53 Go to next message
Hey guys, this is something I thought I would never do, but I need advice, from other people. Ok, im in IT at the moment, and i thought I liked it, but im just not motivated to do anything anymore, so, yeah, im getting over it, I hate studying, and its an industry, where you need to keep studying. Now, I always wanted to be a truck driver when I was younger, and I still would love to, but where should I start?

Another couple of questions, what do you guys do, and who else does something, they wanted to please their parents for? Rolling Eyes

OK. If you are looking to get into truck driving go visit this site first.
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/gettingalicenc e/gettingaheavyvehiclelicence/index.html?llid=5
Then make sure you have a fair bit of spare money in you pocket, as getting your heavy license is not cheap any more.

Then there is a lot of unemployed truck drivers out there with more experience then you will have, so don't expect to get a job as soon as you have your license.

If after reading up on the process and associated cost you still want to be a TRUCKIE good luck.
My young bloke takes home about $1000.00 p/w sounds good,he starts work Sat/Sun 2am Mon/Fri any time from 4am till 4pm depends on the depot and when his truck is loaded.

Heavy Vehicle Handbook here. pdf file.

I guess that money is not a problem because I think I.T. would pay a little better. Wouldn't you rather be in a job where your furthering your carrier all the time with new knowledge? I know I would rather be in a job where you have to think keeps the mind active.

I had the same problem a while ago.The last jobs i had were marketing jobs and hospitality.
While i did well in these positions and got results it wasn't really where i wanted to be. So i've enroled in a training course in construction.
My dad is a sparkie and we talked about going into business together (then we could both have "& son" on the work van) but i'm more interested in being a builder seen as tho he is the person it revolves around.

Take a chance with trucking if not it's not like you are gunna forget all your IT stuff.

It's simply a case or what YOU want to do not what you are good at

Yeah I know how you feel. I work in the Apple industry, and it's great when I get to go out onsite and set up networks, but fixing laptops in the office just plain sucks, plus the pay and margins are heaps low. What about sales? Good $ to be made there in some industries.

At the end of the day you've got to be reasonably happy with what you do...Doesn't hurt to try something different. You'll always have the I.T. background to fall back onto.

It is a shit feeling looking back in hindsight and thinking "oh, if only I tried this or had done that".

That is my $0.02

Aaargh.. im doing bachelor of IT @ uni and none of this sounds good. I find programming boring. I hate maths. It's the only course I could get into. I find it really easy (I had a whole lot of experience programming before) but I don't feel like it's what I want to do.. and I haven't even got a job yet!
Problem is I don't know what I want to do and all your "wonderful" (sarcasm) comments about IT are swinging me in the direction of transferring ASAP Confused

Same, I'm 20 also, and I have no idea how to start as an apprentice, or if I'll even be accepted cause of my age. Also, I don't know where to look, I checked the Tafe and Apprenticeship websites, but they didn't seem to tell me HOW.

Hi,

IT, like most industries can be good or bad, depending upon what you're doing in that industry.

I'm in IT and I have to admit most of it was great. The area where I specialise in is the Financial Markets/Trading Systems and there's always new technology and always something to do. Fortunately the Financial Markets usually have the money to throw into new systems and things like that, as opposed to the Retail and Wholesale Banking areas.

Before that I worked to chip level doing microprocessor and microcontroller hardware and software deign and development. I really loved that.

The thing I dislike the most about IT is the push from large vendors to constantly put out new software that requires expensive learning and you always seem to be learning something new that, in reality, doesn't do anything much better than what you had. Plus the "dumbing down" of technical people who used to get into the guts of system programming and stuff like that, who now just need to sit in front of a pretty window-panel screen and click on the various options. Something goes wrong you call the vendor 'cos there's no way you know the internals of the product to fix it yourself.

Programming used to be fun, and you used to need to know a fair bit to do it properly. Now, however, with products like Java and C# and .NET just about any monkey can program. Furthermore, your code can now be absolute shit (run like a pig and hog memory) but it's okay, we'll just whack in a faster (or second) processor and put in an extra gig of RAM and she'll be okay.

Hardware repairs are the same. No more board level repair work. You just throw out the offending component and plug in a new one. You've just become a board jockey. Whoo-Hoo!!!!!

Hardly mind challenging stuff.

However, there are areas in IT where you can get some satisfaction and enjoyment out of your work. It depends on exactly what you want to do and to try and find that area within the industry that appeals to you. When you wake up each day and curse the heavens that you have to go to your shithouse job, then it's time for a change.

I'm a truck driver, and I've got to say it's pretty good, out in the sunshine all day, doing easy stuff like ropes, straps, dogs and chains, a lot of the stuff you do is mentally easy, but phyiscally harder, like climbing up on the tray or on top of loads to pull straps and ropes over a load, or even to tarp a load if the weather looks bad. I drive an MR truck, which means it's a Medium Rigid, so I can drive any truck with 2 axles total and upto a GVM of about 16 tonnes. I work for a transport company that is run out of Dubbo, but I work out of the smaller Sydney depot, which is good as we don't cop any flak from the admin in Dubbo as my boss here in Sydney keeps our depot running smoothly. We carry general freight, which means just about anything, from tyres, wood, steel, pallets of anything, chemicals, motor-bikes, smaller trucks, 4-wheelers, anything you can think of, if your thinking of driving a truck, make sure you know what you want to carry before you look for a job, it will make it easier to find something that suits you.

Your best bet would probably be to get a HR license, which is Heavy Rigid, as then you can drive any truck under a semi, which would give you more of a chance of landing a good job, I'll probably be upgrading my license soon to HC, which is Heavy Combination, which is a semi-trailer license, as I'm looking to switch over to car-carrying sometime in the future, but a lot of the time your only driving an MR or HR when carrying cars, but it just gives you more scope for later on.

I reckon if your considering giving truck driving a go, head to a Heavy Vehicle License Instructor and do the course with them and get your truck license and you will see if it's what you want to do or not, as someone else said it will cost you a bit to get the license initially, but then once you've got it you'll always have it, even if you don't get a driving job straight away, it will always be there and you can fall back on it anytime. Getting the license is easy, it's mostly common-sense, you've just got to be more aware of your surroundings and know the vehicle dimensions well, oh and also watch out for just about every car on the road, because car drivers seem to think an truck big or small can brake and pull up in the same time and distance as a family sedan lol. Very Happy

unforgiven.

Being a former employee of Australia Post, I can tell you that posties do not get a grand a week.

However, they do work less hours and get *roughly* the same amount as a regular 8 hour shift elsewhere.

The weeks leading into christmas though. Now that would be a different storie.

Get into Engineering Project Management Systems.
Easier to do in Perth because of Mining Boom over here.

I went straight into it from uni, with an IT degree, and currently earn more than 1st and 2nd year graduate engineers.
(a little over the half century, but will supply no further information so dont ask Evil or Very Mad .)

I think thats pretty good first job out of uni.

I have plenty of options / career paths I can take. The place I work has an excellent graduate development program, So I can pretty much become whatever I want, and get paid the whole time.
No need to go back to uni fulltime and earn no money Smile Can go parttime and have half of the fees are covered by the company Cool

I think I might just be here a while Razz

An IT degree on its own is not worth a crumpet, but combine it with something else and you are in business !
