From memory it's located under advanced tools > system explorer > startup programs. It gives you details of each file such as the file name, location, publisher, version and also what they do in most cases...

True but it doesn't hook you up with the quick google link AND it failed to detect 7 trojans. To be fair, no other program detected them either but antiVir did

Turn off System Restore, boot into Safe Mode then run the antivirus again.

I've just found out i got 2 which are similar. Can't remeber both of their names but here is the newest one, wasptis.exe. The other one is something like intranet.exe. Should i go into safe mode and then run antivirus, will this make norton delete the files?

To get rid of all you start up programs type in msconfig in the run and this will give you a menu that has the start up programs in it, you are able to select the exe you want to start up at the start of windows and you can de select them as well.

Have you tried the symantec site for removal tools, most viruses that nortons cant remove they will have a removal tool for.

BSOD possibly hardware aswell. It depends what BSOD messgae you are getting. Run a format/reinstall on you machine for starters, if that doesnt help, look at hardware devices, take out PCI cards and try new ram.
Hope that helps

Bozza,
what soarer suggested should work in most cases, but if not.
Option 1:
press ctrl + shift + escape. Under the "processes" tab search for the filename. Select end task.
Seach for the file using windows search.
Select it, and hit delete. [Works for exe files]
Or
Run nortons, a write down file names.
Use windows search and write down file path to the files.
Reboot computer in MS DOS mode (can use a boot disk for this)
Navigate to each file to Delete using dos commands.
You can even get clever and write a batch file in windows to do this for you. Call it from in the autoexe.bat or config.sys files, then reboot PC.
Lastly, that MSCONFIG.sys is very handy. Read up on it, it can get you out of a jam or too
Cheers,
-Adam

msconfig is win98 aswell.
Also, HiJackThis, Pest Patrol, Spybot S&D, AdawareSE, Webroot SpySweeper... usually u need to work it out and remove the remenants of the fuckers manually...
this is my day job and I hate cleaning machines, it's just so frickin annoying these days that even after finally cleaning a machine up after an hour or 4 and you beat the lil motherfuckers, you then have to repair alot of the damage done... and then the customer says "you're charging me what!!!" I suppose if you want it done for $5 I can just delete the partition(s) and give it back to you...
Cleaning up failed attempts to fix problems is interesting also... mainly cause ppl have installed everything with the name anti spyware, adware etc and these things are actually nasty pests themselves!

Dude, sell your PC and buy a Mac. All your virus days will be over. All your error and CTRL-SHIFT-DEL days will be over.

Hi,
I just spent the morning running Autorun, then upgraded the new Adaware and ran it and then I did SpyBot Search & Destroy and then I ran Registry Mechanic. All lovely and clean now.
Yeah, thought about getting a Mac, but personally I regard them as the FWD automatic Honda of the PC world. So, I'll stay with my PC for the time being, though it is getting a little long in the tooth and I should upgrade to something faster, more memory and with better graphics. But there's work to be done on the car... and the house (the true blackhole for money).

I personally have a dual boot linux install on this machine and another linux box.
I only have windows xp on here for gaming, however sometimes find I can't be fucked rebooting to browse the net However, firefox does help keep the nasties away, and I don't go looking up crapola on the winxp install... linux helps for that.
Another option is to have an image file of you computer once you set it up the way u like and have your downloads etc on a different drive or backed up...
