do i still need this on my engine? or do i take it off?

if yes, why? if no, why?

Well a thermostat controls your cars temp at about 88 degrees so yes I would still have one. Once your car reaches 88 degrees the thermostat open letting the water through. A thermostat purpose is so your engine does not spend to much time in a cold state. When an engine is in a cold state this is the most common time for engine wear so the sooner the engine is out of cold and into running temp the less wear can happen.

Unless your climate is about 80degC you will still need the thermostat to regulate the engine temp.
