Damn that's awesome. I would SO like to be able to do this - build up a second engine in my spare time, so you don't have to rush anything.

I'm no mechanic, but I reckon I have a fair amount of mechanical aptitude, and I reckon I could do so much stuff myself just by having someone with that guy's kind of experience to show me what to do.

I'd still have to send alot of stuff off to be done by specialists (valve reseat, boring and honing the block, balancing crankshaft etc.) but heaps of what's involved here is cleaning and polishing - I could do that with a bit of advice.

Think of the money you'd save...

Thanks for posting that up, kingmick.

to be honest, there is nothing really special about that rebuild

he polished the valves, what a waste of time

all the sandblasting of manifold/pipes ect ect is just for cosmetic reasons, takes me less than 10 mins to do an entire 4AGE head

Quote:

they DID NOT like being ground. The first valve I offered up to the surface grinder in a six jaw chuck was ok for about 50% of the surface area. then when it was cleaning up more so it started to 'ring' and I reckon the head was about to jump off, I was lucky. Even with only 15mm sticking out the 6 jaw I reinforced the the gap between the seating face and the face of the chuck with plasticine. (common practice in a tool shop) this reduces the nymonics (sound vibration) and stops the valve wanting to ping off its stem when I take a cut! - could have been messy!! But with some careful machining here they are.

maybe he should've given them a hit in that beadblaster of his, or on a wire bench grinder Confused

then lapping the valves in is not necessary if the valve/valve seat cut is done properly

and he doesnt even get the head vac tested to make sure there are no leaks Shocked

btw, polishing of a head is not necessary {can be for some types of fuel}

all that effort and he didnt even use new pistons
