i'd check engine weights carefully - i'm pretty sure a hilux diesel would be a chugger courtesy of the excess weight it would bring you.
if you could locate a small (e.g. 2 litre of less) turbo diesel then you'd probably be onto something interesting.
you'd also want to consider gearbox/diff ratios - as the torque curves and rev ranges vary wildly (e.g. my 3litre hilux redlines at just over 4K rpm but an older hilux 2.8 litre will bare get to 2.5k rpm)
novel idea tho, an oil-burning celica that's not got a fucked engine
cheers.

what about the 2.8l 22R diesel (yes-bizare ) hilux engine.
they are in RN85 hilux's. seeing as they are and R engine (?) you could bolt it up to a W5* box.
its got me stuffed why they are a 22R

Thanks for your replies, i'm not overly concerned with power, i just want a reliable get around for the city outskirts and highway. I'll be heading the wreckers this week to trawel for suitable candidates. See how it goes...

would not buy a toyota diesel engine if you payed me
europeans make the best diesel engines and vw latest range of turbo diesel engines can be remaped to 160+bhp easily
but as for straight diesel engines and for availability
perhaps an import turbo diesel 2 litre from a carina would not be so bad

i.e. audi or VW 2.0 litre turbo diesel.
just go with the gemi isuzu diesel engine.
unless you can some how afford a 1.9 or 2.0 VW TDi.

A diesel Celica is an interesting concept (I've wanted to do a performance diesel project for a while now), but if all you want is a reliable economical runabout there are better ways to do it. For example, a stocker 4A-GE is cheap, easy to swap in and very fuel efficient if in good working order.

That's because it wasn't. The 2.8 Hilux diesel is the 3L. The 22R is and always has been a petrol engine.

maybe the 5ME just grew 2 turbos one day
come to think of it, it does have a CT20(?) turbo and a blue engineer's plate to go with
it may even have a different engine

4A-GE = teh win. Even a 2T-GEU would be pretty good and is a genuine bolt-in conversion.
