Stubborn Inner tie rod ends Mon, 06 June 2005 05:17 Go to next message
hey all... gotta change the inner tie rod ends on my ra28, but the sons of bitches won't move...

i've managed to get the outer tie rod ends done and loosened the idler arm, so i have one of two options... i can remove the pitman arm, or the right inner tie rod end... but it ain't budging... any suggestions? i've got all the nuts loose, just can't crack the tapers...

Try soaking it in WD40\inox something like that
Or you could try some shock treatment(smack it with a hammer a few times around the taper...firmly but not too HARD)

There are a few options...

-get a tie rod puller for $20 or so from a cheap tool place (supercheap etc)

-get two hammers and hit the sides of the steering arms opposite each other at the same time (jars the taper loose). Then thread on the nut so that you will not damage the top of the tie rod end (if you are reusing it) and also to give a larger surface area to hit...I find placing a chock under the arm to stop it moving/locate it and then bashing the crap out of the nut works quite well Smile If it still wont come, hit the sides some more, then try again...repeat as needed... Smile

Cheers
Wilbo

A good trick and usually works get two hammers and hit both sides of the boss at the same time this does loosen the taper.
