2ZZ engine into an MR-S Thu, 09 June 2005 05:05 Go to next message
Hey guys,

I'm considering purchasing an MR-S although the performance is not very inspiring. I saw in a Best Motoring DVD I own that the Japanese workshop Techno PRO Spirits had an MR-S with the 2ZZ engine conversion carried out and the thing was awesome!

Does anyone know where I can get a 2ZZ engine?
I know that this isn't easy as the engine is new.

AND

Would i require a new engine mounts?
I wasn't sure as it's the same series engine...yes thats a guess.

Any help would be great. Thanx.

Regards

What motor does an MR-S currently have?

2ZZ will not be cheap.

1ZZ-FE 104KW from memory.

I could get a turbo or super kit but I really only want about what the 2ZZ puts out which is 141KW and it would survive much longer.

The MR-S has the 1ZZ, the low horsepower, low torque version of the 2ZZ. So its basically el-cheapo Corolla motor versus Celica motor here.
From what I have read this swap has been done a few times in the USA and its straight-forward.
To get a 2ZZ engine you have to find a ZZT132 Celica (current model) front cut. That will be the tricky/expensive part......

I think the current Corolla Sportivo has the 2ZZ as well.

It' makes you wonder why the MR-S has such a poor engine as the chassis has so much potential....

The block is identical so it will be a straight forward swap.

Find something of the same year and it may be a plug n play on the wiring too.

It actually the ZZT231 model celica Wink

It will be a very expensive conversion. Have you considered trying to find a Lotus Elise 111R that already has the 2ZZ? There is a supercharged version now as well I think?

Yeah your probably right.

Would be interesting to see how the radiator, exhaust manifold etc.. worked taking it from front mounted to rear mounted..

You sure??? the Bore and strokes are very different

79.0 x 91.5 on the 1ZZ-FE
82.0 x 85.0 on the 2ZZ-GE

they don't look too similar to me.

As far as I know its the same block with different crank/pistons/rod/head.

The same way a 5MGE is the same block as a 7MGE
And a 1UZFE is the same block as the 3UZFE (within reason)

I would hardly say the 1zz is a poor engine, many people prefer the midrange power of the 1zz to the crazy revving ness of the 2zz. (i prefer the revyness though Evil or Very Mad )

I never understood why Toyota did not put a 2ZZ in the MR-S, at least in limited numbers for a special edition.

That would have made it a real track weapon, that could blow away MX-5's and give lotus a serious run for their money Very Happy

Instead they put it in a FWD corolla!?!? (sportivo)

If it's anything like an AW11, there is only one mount on the engine, so as long as it bolts up to the gearbox, it shouldn't be too complex.

it has been done in japan aswell was quite a quick track car was faster through the twisties than a couple of 400hp silvias and an s2000 but they did have a dry fuel cell mounted in the front for better weight distribution aswell as a wide body. The mrs actually comes out in japan with manual transmission not the crappy trip-shit-tronic

Ive allways wanted to do this swap into an aw11 i think that would be even more potent

4agte > yeah the driver in the MR-S slowed down on the second last lap and let the s15 pass him so he could show the viewers the difference between lightwieght NA's and turbo powered cars.
I agree that it may be more potent in an aw11 as they weigh less....but they not as hot as the current shape!

lie cheat and steal, its the only way you can get ahead.

apart from selling drugs, but drugs are bad mmm kay...

if you want a cheaper project car, just buy an ae86 and put a beams 3sge in it,

then the best part, hold on.

perfect.

seriously, new celica front cuts, id imagine are near impossible to get, let alone for cheap, but if your dead set on it, goto the auctions and find a celica with a MUNTED back end.

usually cheaper than importing a front cut, because people think "that things farked, what can you do with it? and i know, this is usually the place where most front cuts come from, but, by buying "direct" you cut out the front0cut vendor dude.

yes aw11's can be made to look very fat with the right tweaks here and there ive allways wanted to do this converion and mate it to the stock n/a gearbox.

Maybe one day i will get the money/time to do so.

erin kinda likes the idea of an sw30 thouhg Evil or Very Mad

zzw30 with a st215 caldina 4th gen 3sgte Smile would have to be a st215 engine to get it past rego. but hey cant complain... 190kw (iirc)
