i suppose it depends what you want more. if your not planning on painting the engine bay i guess it comes down to 2 things. do u want your car to look good or go faster?

I'd paint last. Car's usually get covered in crap: little scratches, oil, dents etc when pulling engines out or putting them back in. It's easy enough to get the engine in or out without making a big mess, but just to be safe I'd save the painting till last.

Yeah that was my view I was thinking also that it makes it alot easier for the painter if he can get in drive it as opposed to pushing it everywhere.

when some cars are resprayed they dont spray the engine bay.. its a lazy paint job but it doesnt really matter. what do you want from your car?
personally i would paint 1st and put engine in 2nd. if your carefull enough you will have minimal scratches. even if it does scratch, scratches are easier to fix then painting a whole engine bay.

1. install engine to fit/modify everything (e.g. work out where everything will go/bolt-up/attach)
2. remove engine and associated crud (actually, gut entire car if you can)
3. paint the bay
4. reinstall big stuff from engine
5. paint car
6. reinstall small stuff from engine bay, reinstall car contents
7. enjoy

Thanks for all your help thechuckster seems to have it figured out quite well.
But it brings to the question should I really paint my engine bay? This is going to be no show car more a well thought out drift pig.
Just a thought is there some thick heat sheilding paint out there that I could cover my engine bay in?
If so I'm guessing it costs an arm & a leg.

if your new paint job is the same colour as the bay then probably not worth it.
but if you're looking to drift seriously then you might want sponsors (and they come with before/after racing event promo stuff) and that's where a good looking car and engine bay will come in handy.
i'd suggest heat shielding only where needed (e.g. bits too close to turbo for comfort).
cheers, charles.
