Help with learning to Weld Sun, 12 June 2005 18:29 Go to next message
Hey im after some info on where to learn welding for car repairs (ie. rust, damaged areas). I've looked on the Tafe website for courses and found This course, would this course cover the basics on how to weld or just techniques on how to repair cars, i need to find somethin similar to this because it seams that theres nowhere that has this course avaliable.

cheers
chris

The best way to learn is by doing it Smile

Lots of sites on the web have the basics, any further than that and real practice goes along way

I bought a mig welder, and with the "beginers guide to sticking shit to other shit" that was in the manual, i tought my self

I just got a heap of shit, and welded it to other shit

Best way to learn,
Fun too Smile

I would say the biggest tip i got when learning to weld was not to be scared of it! Get a decent helmet and get yourself nice and close to your job so you can see what you are doing. A lot of people tend to stand right back cause theres molten steel going everywhere!! Cool

yeah thats a good tip, another good tip is to not focus on the arc it self, look at your weld pool and follow it, if u watch where the ridges harden off you can get some very nice welds, if you jsut look at the arc its messy as hell

Shocked Shocked
If it's for car body work go for mig, you get a cleaner weld.
If you have access to a mig I'm happy to show you how.

Thanks for the info everyone.

So a Mig welder would be what im looking for? im going to be using it for welding in new patches where rust was and maybe even get around to building a go-kart.

I would go try some work experience but cant realy afford to do that right now, need a job that pays Very Happy
Although if the offers for a bit of help still stands in a few months i might take you up on it Very Happy

What would a decent welder to suit my needs set me back?

cheers
