AE92 GTi Thu, 09 January 2003 01:06 Go to next message
Hey, I saw an AE92 GTi down at Terrigal beach yesterday. It had GTi Twin Cam 16 stickers below the rear doors on both sides and and under the glass on the hatch with the rear wing. Only thing was it was four door!! Aren't GTi's only two door? Could this be a fake? I know the AE82 4A-GEs have Twin Cam 16 written on the sides and they aren't stickers. Maybe the hatch was replaced too. Or did GTi's have a four door option?

Yep - AE92 GTi was sold here in 91 & 92 (mine's actually got AE93 on the chassis) and they were all 4 doors.

Basically it was the replacement of the AE92 SX. Same engine and a few other mild differences.

The mild differences are basically cost cutting measures (deletion of power mirrors, rear headrests, alloy wheels, centre console and trim...) in order to be more competetive in the sub $20k sports hatch market dominated by the Suzuki GTi and the Charade F2.

The common misconception that the GTi is a better equipped or more advanced car than the SX has led to many used car buyers being ripped of paying substantially higher prices than an SX issued at the same time or a year earlier when in fact the SX retailed for at least a few thousand dollars more than the GTi. Frankly, the only justification I can think of to pay premium for a GTi (comparative to an sx) aside from low kms and condition is if it's a rare charcoal grey one.

Actually, that was Lucids quote.

I know that seca SX's came out in Charcoal Grey. But I didn't know Toyota made SX hatches in that colour from factory. I'd love to see one!

I have only seen late model SECA SX's and GTI's in charcoal grey. An advantage to buying a later SECA SX or GTI is the much improved factory paintwork. The later SECA's SX also have power windows.
