lights dim (ra23) Fri, 17 June 2005 13:43 Go to next message
hi guys (and gals)

my headlights (and inside dash lights)dim when i press the horn or the brakes. it is not a heavy drain but its noticeble. dont have any electrical components on it right now. not even a radio. so dont understand why this would happen.
is it something to do with the voltage regulators ?
if im planning to install speakers amps and stuff, would it be recommemded that i change over to falcon alternator (can someone give me the model number ).

by the way, its a ra23

appreciate the input

regards
mo

turn the car on, and check the voltage over the terminals with a multimeter

try putting in a different voltage regulator from another toyota with the same plugs as the one already on there and check the voltage over the terminals

try getting a voltage regulator from another toyota with the same plugs for the wiring and then check the voltage across the terminals after that.

Hi,

If your voltage is that low or the battery is dying then I'd expect your starter motor to be struggling to kick over the engine. Does it?

RA23's suffer from earthing problems, more so as they get older. Clean up the terminals on existing earth points, and add a few new ones for good measure. You'll be surprised what a difference this will make.

checked with the meter and it read 14.4 volts. so that means the alternator is giving out the right output.
