There's fresh oil appearing on the rocker cover seal, nothing huge just a fresh layer everytime i push the engine a little bit. It needs new seals or is it a more complicated affair? (1975 ta22)

Hi,
Sounds like the gasket may need replacing. Check the bolts are tight that secure the cover. Worse case is the cover is warped, but I don't think it gets that hot to do this.

Should the bolts be done up reasonably tight or should i use a torque wrench?

Shouldn't need to be too tight, just firmish. Leave the rattle gun on the shelf...

instead of wasting another post, i'm also having the same problem. When i go to toyota and buy new seals (for my smallport 4age), do i need to apply the high temp silicone too? Some mechanics even told me that the high temp silicone's are even better than the seal itself... anyone got oppinions/help?

Sticking it on is a good way to stop things leaking, but a whole lot messier when you come to pull it off. It's usually only needed on engines that have crappy pressed tin rattle covers the go all out of shape. Use a new gasket, make sure everythings clean, flat, etc. and you shouldn't have too many issues. If somethings damaged and it won't stop, then break out the goo.
