Handbrake stall? Mon, 20 June 2005 14:49 Go to next message
If my car is idling (its a 2T), and i apply the handbrake, it will invariably stall. i've tryed with the lights and heater fan on and off, doesnt make any difference. The only thing i can think of is the little "Brake" light that comes on is drawing an abnormal current, more than all the accesories in the car put together Rolling Eyes or the cable is wrapped around my fuel line Rolling Eyes
i havnt measured the voltage drop anywhere with the brake on yet, but its got about 13.5V across the terminals with no acessories so i rekon the alternator is healthy.
Idle speed is up around 1000rpm.

Don't even know where to start really...

Pull off the console piece, and unplug the handbrake light wire, see if that makes any difference, and try shorting said wire to earth (to put the light on), and see what that does.

Also get underneath, and have a good look at everything in the tunnel.

This isnt when im doing handbrakies, its just when the car is stationary, in netural or with the clutch in. Sometimes it dies as soon as the light comes on, but sometimes it takes a few seconds then just putters out...
How would a bad earth on the light effect the ignition system? the light doesnt flicker or anything and it hasnt always done this, just started a few months ago.

Well, that answers your question. It's all fine when you do handbrakies, so therefore you should do more handbrakies. Problem solved.
