JZA80 W58 vs MA61/RA6X/MA70 W58 Sun, 12 June 2005 07:57 Go to next message
Ok. What are the differences between a JZA80 W58 and a MA61/RA6X/MA70 W58, beisdes the shifter positions (I know that the JZA80 has that funky position that hangs off the gearbox...).

A few things that I have noticed (and blacksupra suggest indicate a JZA80 W58) are...

-the shift lever shaft that enters the rear extension housing...On the JZA80 W58 there are multi ball, ball bearings as opposed to brass bushes in the other W58 versions.
-there are two magnets that mount up to the sandwitch plate at the bottom of the gearbox (I'll insert a picture here at some stage Smile), one each side.
-double row syncros on 1st and 2nd gear? I don't recall if its 1st and second or just 2nd...
-larger input shaft & bearing? (I can't recall the sizes off the top of my head, would someone like to list them?)

If someone has comparison pictures / information on the following that would be great...
-the syncros
-the front bearing differences

Cheers
Wilbo

Yeah people have been telling me that as well...

I'm asking the questions because the box that came with my 1jz has the bearings in the rear extension housing and the magnets (I'm too lazy to drop the front housing off to check the syncros Razz) and want to know if I have a JZA80 box or not Smile

I'm pretty sure I didn't see a syncro reverse...

Cheers

If it came with your 1JZ, then presumably it would be from a 1 or 2JZ of some description, and be of the later variety with all the little extras?

That would be wild speculation Smile

It has a dellow bellhousing, so I can also say that it came from dellow then...that might be the case, but it is just wild guessing!!!

I'd rather have a more clinical and accurate way of tell them apart, now and in the future. Smile

There waont be double syncro's on 1st as you never put a car into first under full load.
Double syncro's will be on 2nd and 3rd.

And reverse is behind the sandwich plate, so if you have rear housing off you can plainly see it.

Groovey, I couldn't for the life of me remember which gears had the added syncros Confused

Yeah I realise that reverse and 5th gear are behind the sandwich plate and are visible, but like I said I don't recall seeing a syncro on reverse (if I had of seen a synco there I wouldn't have bothered asking the questions)! I didn't look that hard however (was time poor, and camera battery's were flat...) so I may have missed it, or it may indeed have not been there....when I have a shifter position to put on it *pokes crUZsida* I'll take it apart again and take pics, I may even crack the front gasket and check 2nd/3rd syncros to be sure (and take comparison pictures).

I'm still looking for a definitive answer to this question.

I've looked in the EPC and its shows that late MA70 W58's (91-11->onwards) have magnets on the sandwitch plates (I suspect all steel sandwitch plate W58's have magnets on the sandwitch plates, but I am not 100%). It also shows that JZA80 W58'a and MA70 W58's have the same front bearing retainer, I don't have detailed enough information to find if the front bearing is the same.

Cheers

I currently have three disassembled gearboxes in my garage: a JZA80 W58 and 2x RA60 W57's. If you want to have a look at these side by side you're welcome to do so.

isnt reverse engaged via the idler gear on toyota boxes hence the usual reverse clunk as the idler must enage with 2 gears at the same time?

is it possible to have a syncro with this set up? sounds unlikely.

reverse is the same deal with 1st your not engaging it unless youve come to a halt.

1st has a synchro though so you don't have to be at a DEAD stop to put it in.
If you have ever driven a car without a synchro on 1st you'll quickly learn that the man who decided to put on there was a god.
