4agze no spark??? Tue, 21 June 2005 13:57 Go to next message
im helping a friend who has done a 4agze conversion into his n/a aw11. He used to have a 20v with a microtech (which he was now using in the conversion) to cut a long story short he shorted the battery somehow and fried everything electrical in the car. He asked me to come have a look for him as he was trying to wire up the old 4agze ecu to the injectors etc etc.

When i got there the loom looked like some of luigi's finest spaghetti and was strewn all over the engine bay.

The car had no spark and fuel as the fuel pump wasnt turning on.

After realising that he was going the hard way about it by trying to rewire the gze chassis loom to the n/a chassis loom we then used the n/a chassis loom and fuse box and got the fuel pump working.

Now there is no spark...

We tried this and that until i decided to see what error code the ecu would spit out.

it turned out 14 which i believe is the Ignition Signal

and from what ive read could be any of these 3 things

Igniter and ignition coil circuit
Igniter and ignition coil
ECU

We have tried replacing the coil with no success and im about to test the ignighter.

The ecu wasnt in the car at the time of the short but the wires seem to be going to all the right places and are all hooked up we have traced the wires from the ignighter to the ecu and all seems well there any help would be much appreciated

edit: fuses are fine aswell made sure to check that out first Very Happy

Well... is there a trigger signal coming to the ECU? Do the injectors operate? Does the ECU, the coil, ignitor, injectors, etc. all have power when they should? Time to get out a diagram and a mulletmeter, and go a-tracing.

The Witzl's tips:

  • Use a logical process of deduction and elimination to norrow down the scope of the problem.
  • Check the ignitor is a PROPER GZE item (if the GZE has the twin coil packs and CAS)
  • Check the ECU compatibility with Ignition system. Take off the top panel, and look at the labels of the ECU pins. If there is a pin labelled "IGd" then you have an ECU which is to be used with the twin coil packs + CAS.... if there is no IGd, then its a dissy ignition system.
  • YOU CAN use a standard dissy/coil/ignition combo from a 16V or early AFM dissy GZE.... you just dont wire up the IGd pin at all.
  • CHeck that EFI MAIN relay is working and giving power to the engine and ECU
  • Check there is POWER at the coil and ignitor. CHeck the Ignitor case is earthed.
  • Does the car have spark plugs? Are the leads ok?
  • is there actually an engine in the car, or just some big meatballs in Luigi's spaghetti?

its all aw11 afm gze stuff as everything has been transplanted from a half cut so that narrows your list down consideranbly...

it has an engine and spark leads and would you beileve it spark plugs i know it has spark plugs as we used one of them and a lead to check for spark...

the leads were all replaced from another working car then tested with no luck...
and the ignighter was earthed but its worth having another check i guess.

i didnt see any meatballs but ill double check...

so that leaves the efi main relay and the ignighter case earth.

cheers witzl

as witzl said, you need to narrow it down...
crank motor and test for AC voltage at the pickup (dizzy/CAS), then check for same at ECU, then check ECU output to igniter and go from there...
does help if you have a scope you can borrow tho... makes things much easier, rather than trying to read a slow multi..

good luck!

bugger.. got AC peak and hold function? voltage of CAS/dizzy when hand spinning can be in the tens of millivolts..
