A few questions concerning MA70 Wed, 22 June 2005 06:36 Go to next message
Hey guys...

Was driving along to day, and spotted my much beloved type of car...
MA70 Supra...
It was parked on a persons lawn, but I couldn't get in contact with anyone right there and then (I have a number to ring later)
I did a bit of a walk around the car checking bits and pieces...
Now:
Rego 22 Dec 2005... (6 months rego... Decent)
Now, it has a piece of rust, around about the size of a Nokia 8210 (Think around 1 - 1.5inches, by about 3 inches) in the front of the passenger door... It is NOT surface rust, but fairly decent rust in it...
There is a bit of a chip on the drivers side that does have SURFACE rust in it...

The inside isn't the tidiest I've seen (But not too bad the seats and all for it's age)
The gearstick boot is worn pretty badly and falling away
Same with the hand brake

I have since found out (halfway through making this post the owner rang) that the suspension is all new, the 7M-GE motor has been reconditioned and is still under warranty and that the high beams have a bit of a problem with them...
The front bar on drivers side has a "scrape" on it right on the corner, looks like a run in with a gate entering a property...
It needs a new front left tyre (passenger side)
Paint is decent, (but was VERY dirty when I was there)

The owner is asking $5500 (hasn't been advertised yet) and I'm thinking it is a slightly steep price for a 7M-GE 5 speed with the interior in the condition it is in...

Now, I'm just wondering if there are any problems or things to check across the range of MA70s when looking...
This one is dead standard...

I might be ducking out at around 5:30 to look at it, but I'm unsure, I might have to organise another day...

I just need to know some things to check on it...

The lady did say the suspension and motor is new (sits quite well actually *standard height* and doesn't "droop" like the ones with old suspension)

So what sorts of things should I be checking out?
Price seems steep for me, and I also don't believe I could get up the $5500 for it that she is asking...
I'm thinking more at around $2500 - $3000 (ALOT of people have been advertising them at $4000 and having BIG problems selling them (7M-GE ones...)

Just need a bit of help...

Matt

Unless you plan to keep it dead stock for a couple of years, find another one.

It will stay stock for a damn while, I don't have the money to mod it much at the moment...
But a turbo conversion will be good later on!
So I see a N/A as being a good base car for a turbo conversion... Plus will keep insurance a bit lower

Its just that a car with a rebuilt 7MGE is not the best base for a conversion.

You are better off buying a car with a BHG'd 7MGE and tired auto and paying $2000-3000 less.

Just my thoughts anyway.

How often do ones with BHG come up for 2 - 3 G?
I've only ever spotted one, and it had worse rust then this...

As for a conversion... I mean ripping the whole motor out and dumping either a 1JZ in or a 2JZ...

Edit: So are there any structural things that I should be looking out for?

Not sure, I've never really looked at the price of mk3's

But with this one, you are paying a premium because the owner has rebuilt the motor.
Its something you wont need if you plan a swap.

If someone spends 3k rebuilding the motor (which is about right for a full workshop rebuild of a 7mge), then they'll ask for about 2k more than if the motor was tired.

Now if you pull this out and sell it, you'd be LUCKY to get a grand for it.

So there is money waste right there.

So unless you plan to drive it as is for a while 6+ months, I'd look for a better car.

You even said the interior was looking pretty poor.
Thats the kind of thing that would turn me away from getting a car.
Motors can be changed, bodywork can be fix/resprayed (you'll probably want to respray it in a few years to the colour of your choice anyway), but the interior is normally left as is, and left to last.

But hey, this is my thoughts and what I would do.
But its not my money on the chopping block.

I totally appreciate your input in here mate...

As for keeping it stock for 6+ months...
Try 3+ years...

MK3 are going for around 5 - 9 grand from what I've seen...
I'm going to check it out a bit better once the owner is there...

I'm unsure if it's just the fact that the car is dirty or not... The car hasn't been advertised yet, just the sign in the back window, and it only went in 2 or so days ago the owner said...

Shocks are all brand new and supposedly "uprated"
All tyres, bar one look decent (thinking tyre not at correct pressure worn out...) but there is supposedly a very decent spare sitting in the boot...

I'll have a closer look at it, as for the gearstick boot, there's plenty of nice ones I've seen that I'd like from like Supercheap... So a bit of rice for a reason mightn't be so bad... Razz

I'll check it out more closely...

Thanks heaps mate

If you are looking at keeping it stock for that long, then a rebuilt 7mge, manual, and new suspension may be the best way to go.

As you said, the interior may just need a detail.

If the 7m has been rebuilt properly (many, many are not), then you should have a trouble free time (if only)

So you think it's worth a check?
See if I can knock the price down?
And check out the interior especially to make sure it's all good and just a "view" of looking shit?

Yeah, worth a look.

Depends on how bad the interior is.
Use that and the rust to knock it down.

Just to chime in, check the boot seal for rust, lift it up and check under it. They rust kinda bad there.

Also, ask him when the 7M was rebuilt how they changed the head gasket, and wether or not they torqued it down enough.

yeah im going to pipe up a little here too.. 5500 is WAAAYYYY too much for it.

i bought peeack's which already had a 7MGTE in it for 5K, sure suspension was crap (replaced that now anyway).. but everything else is pretty okay and its rust free from where ive checked.. and otherwise in pretty good nick and im happy with it.

you shouldnt be paying more than 5K from a dealer for a NA one, so private is going to obviously be way cheaper..

$0.02

Hey guys

I've been back there since...
The interior actually isn't as bad as I thought...
Only really the gearstick boot and the handbrake boot, and worn carpet on the floor...

Clock has 330 000 KM on it...
Rust isn't as BIG in area as I thought, but still needing removal...
Mirrors on both side, sort of had the little casing "pushed in" but should come out...
Will need 3 new tyres (originally thought one new tyre)
The other 3 tyres have all been set to wrong pressures (Front under pressure, rears over pressure)
So I have to check the price of 4 new tyres (I won't run on 1 old tyre 3 new...)
I have a few bargaining points...
Just need to get back when the actual owner is there!

One of my arguments...
Hopefully she doesn't reply with "It's a new engine"
I'd just reply with, "Did you replace the whole car whilst you were at it?"
