Some of them came with an additonal outlet from the oil filter cast aluminium thingy (banjo fitting on the under side of where the filter lives) That line can be plumbed to an oil cooler and then back into the banjo fitting at the thermo housing.
I currently have that line blocked off on my car and I have a larger sump capacity (that facilitates oil cooling by design).

On the thermostat housing there is facility for both "in" and "out" holes! We all know 3TGTE's came equipped with either an oil cooled turbo (mainly found in the 1982 models), or a water cooled turbo (mainly the 1983 models). The oil cooled turbo units were also given an oil cooler to assist with this job.
The oil cooler is controlled by a thermostat - it only flows oil when the oil is hot enough to open the thermostat. This thermostat is located in line by the sandwich plate at the oil filter. While bypassed, the oil supply for the turbocharcger bearings is fed through the steel pipe, around the front of the engine, and into the oil feed line, byt the thermostat. When the oil heats up, that steel pipe is blocked off, and the oil is routed through the oil cooler line to the oil cooler.
From the cooler it is then fed back to the turbo oil feed line through the thermostat. Also present at these junctions is an oil temp sensor too.
