GA65 project - updated with lots of pics
|
Sun, 01 May 2005 02:28

|
My RA65:
About 4 years now when I bought it, it was the best condition xA6x celica I had seen. The interior was pretty much mint, and the car was stock apart from tint, a dodgy sound install & a 2" exhaust:
Today, it looks more like this:
I slowly did little things to it - hand-restored Ma6x rims, US-spec rear sidelights, black front grill & emblem, Kings lowered springs, fixed up the sound install, some poly bushings, momo wheel, strut tower brace, K&N filter, black grill & badge, short shifter, Ma6x drivers seat, etc. The original plan was to work the 22RE, just for the satisfaction
All that changed when, at the end of last year, I bought a 2nd gen 1GGTE with shagged turbos, pretty much complete apart from ignitor. Yes, the first 2 pics are exactly how it arrived - never ship somehting on a crappy palette!
I've been accumilating parts for it ever since.

This was my first try at painting a cam cover last year, though I'll be redoing them in satin black:

Well, I'd love to, but I want if off the road for the least time possible, which means accumilating as much as I can beforehand. I should have had the engine all cleaned up, painted, & seals replaced by now, but I've been a bit slack.
Waiting on a few things like Ed's rear disc swingarms Next thing to do is the front suspension, though I haven't worked out exactly where to weld on the threaded tube to get the range of adjustment I want with 10" springs.

Same size as the stock badge on the front grill of an SA63 or RA65, which IIRC is the same as that on the front of xA6x supras, and IIRC is also the same size as the B-pillar badge on all xA6x celicas & supras.

B-pillar badge is about 1"x3/4"
Front badge is about 2"x1"
Is it the 2" one?

My apologies - I always thought that on xA6x Celicas, the front badge & b-pillar badges were pretty much the same size. Perhaps they are, and the Supra frotn bage is much bigger than the Celica front badge.
Either way, the front badge in the pic is the stock Celica front badge - would you like me to measure it when I get home?

BTW, how is the equaliser sounding? Did you get it all sorted?

Yeah, if you could measure it that would be great.
Could solve a problem of mine.
But yeah, B-pillar and nose badges on the Supra's are definately different sizes.
Dunno about ye Celica's though.

Hi Matt - thanks! And no, I got distracted by other car stuff and never got around to sorting it out. I'm actually half considering swapping out my headunit & stacker for some sort of Mp3 headunit solution if it's not too $$$.

Stephan, I only just checked out your story here. You have a fair bit of work ahead of you. Did the 1G ever come in the Celica or just the Supra?
I didn't know about the buddy club wheels? How did you get them?
Let me know if you need a hand sorting out your engine. I'm sure you have got it sorted, but its fun to check out each others projects anyway. And I may need a hand with my 20 valve anyway
I am looking for 2 15" x 7" wheels if you have any spare.

No celica ever came with a factory 6 - the 1GGTE came in GA70 Supras, MZ10 (and/or 20???) Soarers etc. The N/A version did come in GA6x celica XXs.
I got the Buddy Clubs off yahoo japan through slidewizeimports.com. They take care of everything - give quotes, bid, local freight to their container in Japan, shipping over to here, customs & delivery to your door. I highly recommend them - Zac is fantastic to deal with. I don't have an 15" wheels... just a set of stock 14"x5.5" celica/tarago/corona wheels. But as you know, yahoo japan is a bonanza of secondhand rims, and nice 15" rwd rims are quite cheap. Why only a pair - are these for your AE86?
My engine is far from sorted, you're more than welcome to help, and I'm more than happy to give you a hand with your 20v

Update - now have a solid-disc rear end here and the T3 parts above. A set of SuperPro bushings are on their way.
Waterpump on the 22RE shat itself yesterday, so that might up the priority of this project along a bit!

Looking good Stefan, might need a cluster to suit a 6 cylinder, digital even !!!

Oh, they arrived ages ago. They look very nice - I can take pics if you like. I can't remember what the price was but I'll look through my emails. I bought the upper rollerbearing hats at the same time as the camber tops and he only charged $30usd for the hats rather than $50usd.
I did a mock fit up the other day, and have a question regarding how the hats work with the camber tops though:

You don't have to - Tim mounted his engine a lot further back than usual. I'm not going to anyway, needs much more engineering etc.
That pic was taken not long before which reminds me, you'll have to tell me how I can contact the panelbeater guy you know. Not sure how it would work fixing my A-pillar though (which is a bit dented).

Well, probaly time for an update. I'm actually not sure how to proceed with this project - should I:
* Put a new waterpump on the 22RE, the do the brakes/suspension etc in sections, so I still have a car and when it comes time to do the engine, almost eveyrhting else will be done, or
* Keep car off the road and do everything at once.
?
I have to work out sorting out the exhaust, I/C piping, roadworthy inspection, getting bodywork fixed up etc. in around all of this. Probably won't be dropping the engine in at my place, which means hiring a trailer... hmm.
I originally thought it would make the most sense to get my bonnet + guard fixed up & repainted while the car is off the road, but my A-pillar needs some work too, which means leaving the car with a painter. Decisions decisions.
Any thoughts on the colours of the front chin spoiler thingy or the sideview mirrors? These need repainting anyway, have been toying with the idea of getting the backs of the sidemirrors painted white, not sure.

Thanks. The s13 rears are still sitting here - when I borrow some spring compressors, I'll take the springs off and will then be able to compare the compressed/extended length with stock. They should be close, perhaps a little shorter, but I'm not sure yet. They were cheap so I though I'd try them.
If you ignore the spring seat, they are shaped very similarly to the original shocks. The top should bolt right up, but the bottom ring bushing is much bigger (outside diametre AND inside diametre). I think I'll just have to buy replacement S13 bushes then fab a little tube so that the ID is correct.

Finally, an update. Some mates helped (well, they did most of the work) take the front (crank pulley, timing gear etc) and rear (flywheels, clutch etc) off the engine & take the seals out. Hopefully I can get them matched tommorow morning. Unfortunately, the idler & tensioner pulleys seem to be stuffed, which means $$$ for toyota parts unless I can find a non-genuine timing kit.
Also took the springs off the S13 rears. While the lower bushings are shagged, the shocks themselves seem to be in really good condition - no leaks and a wide range of adjustment between 1 & 4. They seem to adjust bump AND rebound too They were a bargain - $140 or something delivered from ebay.
Genuine rocker cover seals & waterpump are on their way from Japan, king springs for the coilovers should be arriving in a week or so. The superpro bushings will arrive with the springs.
So next thing to do is get those bushes matched & clean up the engine. I shoudl ahve done this ages ago!

Lookee what I just won on Yahoo japan:
Late Bride Ergo 1.
Won't arrive for a few months though. Have already won a pair of rails to suit, so will be looking for something for the passenger side.. which means that my stock seats AND Ma61 seats will be up for sale, though obviously not until they have been replaced.
Engine is somewhat cleaner, most seals etc have been bought or are being ordered, and front springs + a whole car's worth of superpro bushes (nearly) arrived today.

Update: Waterpump & cam cover seals finally arrived from Japan. Engine has been cleaned, Cam covers have been painted VHT satin black, looks great, but I muffed the last one when the paint blobbed. Must have had my finger slightly over the nozzle which made it clog up. Needs sanding back and touching up when the weather is nice - hopefully tommorow, along with painting the lower timing cover & intake piping that sits above the cam covers. Still undecided on what colour to paint the intake piping.
More interestingly - Garrett I/C :
Thanks again XPLOSV, it's great.
Won this on yahoo japan, so now I will have a pair on matchign seats - Brix I for driver, Ergo I for passenger :
