That's a bit of an open-ended question isn't it?

If you want to know if VVTi and supercharging will co-exist, the answer is yes.

when supercharger is pumping, it wil have same effect as an NA car, ie fatten the low and midrange torque. all it does is change the valve timing, and that effect is universal as it is time based, not induction based Wink

Just out of interest, would it then be possible to use the VVT to help stop pinging under boost?

you mean by making the overlap smaller and restricting the amount of air going in at higher rpm.. maybe,... continuously variable lift would be more effective tho, as it would decrease the VE/cylinder pressure

why not just tune the engine properly?

heh,

That question was purely hypothetical...

Thanks for the response...

It was my (flawed?) understanding that VVT advances the timing as rpm increases, which is what is done also to stop pinging (isn't it??)...

Maybe my question was a bit unclear, and should have been something more like: "Would an engine with VVT ping less than an engine without it when boosted?"

Err...I'm still learning about this kinda stuff btw...My expertise is in computer science...

i thought that pinging was caused by many things one being timing too far advanced

VVT, Variable VALVE timing Wink.. changes the rpm at which the cams work effectively.
