icon5.gif  MS55 Crown Vented Disks?? Mon, 04 July 2005 10:02 Go to next message
Does anyone manufacture vented disks for a MS55 Crown?? The reason im asking is that I have borrowed/purchased some MS55 hubs which are similar to MS65 hubs so that I can convert to 5 stud using a corona strut and hilux caliper. It all bolts up and lines up ok, just need a thin spacer behund the caliper. it should all be good if i can get some vented disks. Can anyone help??

they cant be "simialar" tho matey, they need to be Exact. it is the same problem that arose when i went out and got some ms112 crown hubs. Also ms85 and 75 are different.

MS55 never came with vented discs. Most of us Crowners modify the HQ disc/hub to suit for an easy conversion.
I recommend looking thru the DBA catalogue for something close to what you need.
The Stitt used a Hoppers Stoppers kit to get 330mm discs on his 50 series wagon.

Gt he knows all about my conversion

(hubs purchased/borrowed from Stitt)

Yeah Kyle most of the guys get MS65 hubs and go the HQ setup. Why not get a hoppers hub, like mine and bolt whateva to that.

When I meant similar I meant the hubs look similar from the outside. The bearings were all greasy and dirty so i didnt check exact tolerances but they looked like they use the same bearings as the corona strut. The MS55 crown hub and disk slid straight onto the corona strut. I will check with a vernier though.

Ah rightio, wasn't aware there was prior knowledge. Smile

Beware, there are 2 different hubs for the MS55 - the Jap ones (which are similar to the MS65 ones) and the AMI/PBR ones. You'll recognise these easily as the discs have a much taller hat on them. The Jap discs are only 42mm tall, whilst the PBR jobbies will be around 70+mm. You want the Jap ones.... Wink

Pics would be handy, and so would a clearer explanation of what it is that you want to do. I get the impression you are doing a Hilux caliper/Peugeot disc conversion except with a 5 stud hub.

Yes I have done the hilux caliper/Peugeot disk conversion and am chasing the famous 5 stud conversion. From what you have described, I think Stitt has given me the PBR hubs. Here are some pics comparing the crown hubs and disks with the peugeot disks and corona hubs.

If i could get a hold of ventilated disks the same dimensions as the crown disk it would be all sweet pending the crown hubs uses the same bearings as the corona hub. I will search through the DBA and CBC catalogue.

Also ive been doing some reasarch and noticed that Chris Davey bolted a HQ Kingswood complete brake setup onto an XT130 strut. I may look into this also.

I must have them the wrong way around....I know Stitt's wagon is an imported Custom but I thought the hub you have was a PBR one. Nevertheless, you have the one that's more awkward to play with.
The bearings will be identical. Just make sure they sit completely on the stub axle.

Would you mind measuring the height of the rotor and posting what the ideal diameter is (something like 266mm from memory)? There will be something close in the DBA manual.

That looks sweet as Jayem! Does the disk run in the centre of the caliper or fairly close enough to the centre?? Did you use any spacers on the caliper??

You'll just want to be sure the MS55 disc hub is the same as the RS55 drum hub, but otherwise that is perfect.

Disk hub isnt the same as drum hub but disk hub can be used too. Flange offset is the same but the flange itself is too big without turning the diameter down in lathe. This applies to both of the hubs. Disk hub is something like 15mm too big in diameter and drum hub is around 2mm...
Disk runs exactly in the middle of the caliper, no need for any sort of spacers.

Here's some pics:

Here's lathed one. Notice the optional BMW bolt pattern.

That looks liek a cool set up

Might of been a way for me to go to get monster brakes.

Kyle I would have given you Imported hubs. We havn't pulled any AMI crowns apart here.
