I think that would be ok. I know satellite nav screens and reversing cameras are ok.

hey guys,
this is the best logic i could conclude as to these laws:
viewing things such as satellite navigation and reverse cameras are regarded as an aide to the driver and are thus not illegal, viewing things such as dvds or playing with your head unit display are regarded as distractions because your train of though is no longer with driving your car when viewing these things, and are thus illegal.
all of these things require the driver to divert his attention from the road but i can see how you might get distracted by watching a movie (porn or otherwise, hehe) while driving rather than quickly glancing to see when your next turn off is.
comprimise: build an in-car PC, and have a dvd-player, sat nav, mp3 player, and your reverse camera all in the one display. When you get pulled over and your watching a movie, simply press Alt+Tab and bring up your sat nav i've only got a basic head unit myself but a car-pc would be cool.

So now we wait for someone to get fined for this. Post to bitch about fine, points and how ghey the law is.
BUT
Same person has accident while watching said dvd and posts "feel sorr for me I wrote off my car and broke my fav porn disc".
Get over it. Ok law is dumbass. Trust me. Those who know how I know know I know. We can through mass protest at different levels bring change but don't cry when either a) You break a law and get fined or b) do something dumbass like watch tv while driving and crash. The law is there to deter people like you and save the other poor bastard you crash into.

Because people will just pay money if we had a fine only system and just go on their way until the govt announced another record budget surplus and pay rise for themselves then cry poor. It's a simple system don't like the penalty, don't break the law even if it is dumb. Breaking it only justifies the law by maitaining or increasing the number of offenders so they need the law in their eyes to prevent it. The points are a bigger deterent then the dollars as you can just front up to cojurt, say tou can't afford to pay all at once and pay it off over time. Then if you don't they take not only your licence but ypur rego as well.

Yes i understand that, but what happened to a relevent point system that was based on the severity of the crime..3 points for not keeping left on the freeway..WTF..yeh it shits me aswell when people do it but i wouldnt place it in the same category of someone screeming past me at 30km over the speed limit! I like the fact they have brought in the changes but i feel 1 or 2 points would have been more than enough to police them..

Its all part of an evil government scheme to make you think they aren't money hungry.
See most people can not afford to lose their license and when they lose all 12 points in one incident for doing 3km/h over the limit whilst watching their in car dvd with their arm hanging out the window on double points weekend they only have two choices.
1) Drive regardless of the fact that they have lost their entire license.
2) Lose your job, lose your house, lose your life.
So when people obviously choose option 1 the cops can then get them for:
1) Driving unlicense
2) Driving without insurance
3) Driving whilst disqualified
4) ... you get the picture.
The total sum for this would be over $2,000 in fines.
Then the bonus is that you end up having to quit your job anyway and then you aren't eligable for the dole so you don't get put down on the figures as involuntarily unemployed so the government gets to artificially improve their unemployment figures.

Anyone driving with their arm out the window while watching TV deserves to be shot in my opinion.
Realistically, if you want to watch TV, sit in the lounge room, not the car, the life you save might be mine....

I actually think this is a pretty reasonable law. the driver should have no need of an in-dash dvd player that he/she can see - the driver should be concerntrating on driving, the dvd systems are so the passengers in the car don't get bored.
and as stated, a $200 fine won't stop most people who can afford these things, so the points are added, because everyone has a fixed amount of points, so it hits every driver equally as hard, unlike fines which anally violate the poor (like me), and Mr & Mrs "Mercedes parked in disabled parking" don't even notice the fines.
speaking of, parking in a disabled parking spot without appropriate documentation should be a $2k fine - fuck people who are so lazy they figure they're better off inconveniencing some poor bastard who cant walk than walking that extra 50 metres.

there has always been a fine for this, as it has always been illegal - just now there are points involved
you will actually find that most LEGALLY fitted screens viewable by the driver are only able to display a "TV-type" screen if the handbrake is on!
Note: most aftermarket TV screens have a handbrake switch wire which only allows the screen to work if the handbrake is on.
Rollaboy - i think you will actually find you can get busted if your TV operates with the handbrake OFF, you dont necessarily have to get CAUGHT....

if u get them ones that go in the dash with the H/U as one then just click it off and let it fold back the dash befroe the copper gets his/her arse out of the car behind u... i mean by the time u see the cop is pulling u over (flashing lights and sounds behind u) and till he is out of his car and walking towards you (close enough to see a dash LCD screen) is like 30sec minimum! that heaps of time to do everything and also u usally click the car off when they pull u up and shit.

i'm not sure if it is illegal in japan also, but fuck me, everyone is watching TV while driving!!! then again, when i see this it's usually in traffic so they aint goin anywhre in a hurry.
driving around today with the sat nav on (cos i have NFi where i'm going yet ), i didn't find it too distracting.. you glance at it to see when the next turn is coming up.. then swear as you realise the GPS is out by 20m and you've passed it , but Sat nav is not a continuous attention thing.. unless you are lost, and then ppl pull over to work otu where the fuck they are
in Aus where speeds are generally much higher, people SHOULD get fined for watching TV/using phone/speeding/SMOKING when it is unsafe to do so... travelling at speed is unsafe at the best of times with 4WD mums
ahh.. anyway, 3 points should be a minimum.... i'm glad that the rich bastards are now gonna feel it a little too (tho they still get off in court, but thats a differetn story)
totally OT, can you get toyota Sat Nav CD's to suit australia? that work in grey imports? etc?

I'm still using the old Clarion 5.6" TFT I had because your TV "just" hits on the aircon controls.
I have to go buy a half din pocket, remove the cup holders and move the whole lot down half a din so that it fits.
Sounds like too much effort for the moment though

At 50km/h anything is safe... unless the area is actually built up with many pedestrians (e.g. shopping malls, kids playing near the road etc) I don't think they should exist.
Just because there is more than 4 houses along a 1km stretch of road does not warrant a 50 zone in my opinion.
Also smoking while driving is no different to talking to a passenger while driving... it takes almost zero effort.
Actually you've got me onto a sore topic now... stupid government and their underrated speed limits!
Cops shouldn't be able to fine people based on an arbitrary number... if they need a highly calibrated military device to establish that someone is going too fast then they've got a problem.
Speeding tickets shouldn't even exist... if a driver was going so fast that it dangerous then its "Negligent Driving" if its not then why fine people for doing it?
What next? Accelerating with intent?
Also they say they inject all the money from speeding tickets back into road safety programs but then they just declare massive surplus's in their road safety budgets!

i dunno man, if you have ever seen a chick drop a ciggie while driving, you'd think it was unsafe too
but apart form that i agree.. but it's all the lowest common denominator crap
around here speed limits are typically 30.. 40 on bigger roads, and 50 on 3 lane wide equiv of parra road... on things we would 80-90k's on, it's bloody 60!!
that said, most ppl do around 20k's over the limit and cops generally won't pull you up until you are around 30 k's over the limit!!!! buggerall speed cameras, few roadside radars (mouse catchers ), and radar detectors are legal (but seem to go off at anything....
and the cops chase you in the equiv of a 600cc daihatsu heh heh
