Best flowing 4age head? Fri, 15 July 2005 13:10 Go to next message
later this year i will be doing more development on my engine after the 4agze rebuild i just completed. Which of the following 4age heads would support the best flow for a turbo set up if port polished and engineered properly with cams, valves, shims, springs, etc...

1. black top 20v
2. 16v small port
3. 16v big port

obviously one of these has to bolt to a 4agze fully built bottom end but dont mind switching to a 20v head if this setup will allow a lot more flow for a turbo set up. I want to know this now before i invest any more money in cams, etc.

thanks in advance
jeff

more boost = more air = needs largest ports possible = bigport 16v

= wrong.
The air doesn't flow any faster, just under more pressure. Larger port size is only needed if the air speed is getting too high, and that's hard enough to do with the small port 16v.

I'd personally go for the 20v head as they have a larger valve area and the VVT gear helps the turbio wake up earlier than a fix cam does.
(This is in fact the engine that I'm building next year)

for budget-wise applications, i think the smallport 16V is the best option. Purely because there is less $$$ involved with getting the 20V head and intake manifold/throttles complete.... and in a RWD application the smallport intake manifold is much easier to modify to suit.

of course i am biased, i had a smallport 16V turbo
