5MGE help Sun, 17 July 2005 08:20 Go to next message
im having a little trouble getting the 5mge in my wagon running properly
firstly its running extremely rich and fouls the plugs right up and stalls the engine after about 5 minutes of running, it seems to only rev to about 3000rpm when it cuts out and bogs down. and also it only runs if i jam the afm flap open with a screwdriver, if i take it out the engine chokes and stalls.
i was just wondering what might be hthe cause of all this and how to fix it, and maybe in what order and how to tune it up a little bit.

thanks jesse

I recall u having 2 different afm's? have u tried the other?

Also TPS might need an adjustment.

5mge ecu should base fuel mainly on afm and tps.

Maybe slightly coolant temp also.

did we get the water temp wired up? there is no reading from the dash yet but i guess that doesnt matter as long as the ecu is getting a reading.
ill try the other afm tomorrow some time, then pick your brain about the tps if i can get it running again.

hey i've got a hiace van with a 6mge in it running on 5me electrics (ecu, dizzy)
i'm having the same problems with fouling plugs although when plugs aren't fouled, the car drives great... sometimes needs help to settle into idle but normally good.
only bad thing i have still when new plugs are in is that i have an annoying flat spot/stutter at about 1/4 throttle at around 2000-2500 rpm

definitely a problem with too much fuel with the plugs fouled and heaps of black smoke when i put my foot down.
i got some 5me injectors today to put in as i'm told you need the same injectors as that of the ecu u are using but i don't know if this has been done already and if it has the 5me injectors in already i won't klnow where to go from there

anyway hopefully we'll both be able to get somewhere with it all

i'm told that 5mge and 6mge injectors are the same but are they actually the same as a 5me aswell??

also i have 5me electrics running my 6mge motor and is running incredibly rich
i have no O2 sensor at all but if i put an O2 sensor in, is there such a spot on the ecu of a 5me for an o2 sensor??
maybe this is my problem with why it's running so stupidly rich??

no, you dont need an o2 sensor. the 5me ecu doesnt use one anyway.

i ran my 5mge on 5me electrics for ages with no dramas, even without the tps, or o2 sensor.
keep lookin...

Jesse, another idea i had was maybe the cold start injector is stuck open, or wired wrong and always on? Try unplugging it to start with. Engine had been sitting around for ages so never know.

Try unplugging the TPS to see if it changes.

I once had a cold start injector become stuck open, so even when it was unplugged it was apraying shiteloads of fuel into the plenum. This could be another place to look if you have unexplained uber-richness. My fix was to disconnect it from the fuel rail completely and plug up the hole with a bolt and thread sealant. And despite what you may think, it wasn't hard to start it cold after that. Confused

was just wondering if u could tell me what size thread the bold is that goes into the hole from where you took the cold start injector out from... i think it may be the next thing i need to try.
also i've just found that my alternator is only charging the battery at like 12.6V so obviously it's no good.... do u know what sort of aleternator i need to replace it with??? can i just use a 5me or 5mge one??
thanks
