I'm pretty sure this is a common prob on the AE82 Twin cam corolla's.
Mine does it too.
Here's a link that may help.

my mums AE82/4AC had this problem.... it ran fine then in traffic it would not idle.. you need to hold your foot down a bit to keep it going or it stalls. a few more weeks, then it would stall while driving.. leave it 30 mins or so and it would maybe start, maybe not...

first thing i did was clean out the EGR valve in case it was dumping exhausty into the intake... helped a bit but not much...
then on friendly advice i replaced the dizzy ignitor (the black plastic thing on the outside with four spade lugs). suddenly starts and runs like a dream and has for about 6 months...

advice was it was a common problem for these dizzys...
try to borrow one that you know is good, see if it works.

itmay be something to do with the throttle body. my mate had a simmilar problem,so we swapped part of the throttle body with the same part from another twin cam and the problem went away.

I dont think mines the dizzy... runs 100% cept when idling after awhile of driving...

Symptoms:

After it gets mediumly hot the idle gets erractic and falls to about 450rpm, thus starting to stall.... Yet it comes and go's and doesnt appair when not idling

Any ideas? is there any particular point on the carby u would look?

i didn't think it was either...
and you are describing the symptoms exactly...
if it starts doing it more often or completely dies while driving or refuses to start sometime, check the dizzy ignitor..
if at all possible, borrow an ignitor and try it...

if it was on the carby, it would either be the idle circuit being blocked intermittently (maybe crap in the float chamber) or it could be the EGR stuffing too much exhaust back into the intake (have a look at a manual for the diagram.. it lets exhaust in only after warmup..)
