I guess it's just popularity.

It's a drift Icon, and ppl will pay good money for it.

------

Back when I sold my RX7, (cause I was broke), I had the choice of buying a mint AE71 corolla for about 2000 with roadworthy,

or a 1 owner, accident free ae86 for about 3700 with roadworthy.

The price difference wasn't that much (1700).
So I chose the ae86 anyways. cause it looks nicer.

so if you think about it, they aren't that SUPER expensive.

-------------
hell, I'm having trouble selling the same sprinter, now with a trueno front end, Supper Smooth 4age, Haltech E6k and bodykit for 6.5k! hehehe

its simple... drift explosion = wont for a cheap RWD car..

not to mention they are a good car..

and u are saying 15k for one.. yea sure i am sure a sprinter selling for that price is NOT stock and has alot of work and modifications put into it.. and is probbly CHEAP at that price.

I took the Sprinter for a short drive last week, to test the new brakes.
I was just warming it up at the end of the driveway, when the 12 year-old kid from across the road comes over and asks, "Is that a Sprinter?"
"Yep."
"Do you drift it?

the other day in the wet, I was driving my sprinter down to a mates place.

I was in the foward lane and a turbo soarer was in the turn lane.
The driver gawks at my car, and so does the passenger. I take no note of it.

the turn light goes green and they stomp on the pedal, just to prove a point (ae86 = drift, I can drift better in my better car). They start fishtailing like crazy, and almost loses it.

Man, these cars bring out the worse in ppl! Smile

sprinters arent the only cars that are overpriced, rx3, rustbuckeck excorts, datsons, r100's.
Due to its popularity, and ID, dont expect these cars to get cheaper. The diehard fan will always pay more for it.

makes me think the two i got last year for $300 is a good deal. one was emaculate with not a spec of rust and the boot looked like it had never been used. the other was ruff paint and a bit of rust but all the running gear was great,so i stripped it and sent the shell to the metal yard.

dont think the "just shut up" part is needed. are you upset because you may need to sell a 86 at sometime and you want premium price?

doesnt 30years old make them a classic? or put them into a vintage class? i would rather a 240 or 260 over an 86.

but i would think it comes down to a few things,
1) supply and demand
2) what mods are done to the hachi to justify the price
3) personal taste

i dont see why people surrender to this "takumi tax" though.

hey fair go garth! Laughing

I don't mind the little sprinters now, theyve certainly grown on me and the appeal of a small, reasonably powerful rear wheel drive economical hatchback certainly sounds like a good little car...

The styling of the trueno definitely appeals as well, for obvious reasons. Wink

I don't think I'd fit into the fully sick wannabe takumi category, but I certainly think an '86 would be a nice little car to own

However some seem overpriced, but then when you look into it, I don't think they are. Most have some work to them done, and most have been cared for as they are such a prized car these days.

I think most of the time prices you see on them are reasonable.

But don't just lump everyone who would like an AE86 into the wannabe takumi category. That just aint fair.

Cheers
James

Veteran = Pre WW1
Vintage = WW1 to the mid 20's to 30's (i think)
Classic = 20's to 30's onwards, and can also be a matter of opinion Razz

Sprinters are worth what the market will support. Theyre not overpriced if people are willing to pay that amount, which they obviously are.

PS, the $14,000 price tag someone mentioned at the beginning, in reference to the redbook valuation link, is actually the "price when new"

Get over it and buy the kind of car you can afford.

Sprinters are only good drift cars cos they are a well balanced RWD platform, same reason they are popular for track/hillclimb or just someone who likes a light, well balanced RWD car. They are also one of the last cars of this category to actually be realatively cheap from the start. Lets face it, if your after a mass produced, small RWD car these days, well balanced etc, it falls into the "sports car" category, which attracts a premium price straight from the factory, (eg MX5) not like when these things were usually nuch cheaper than your family mobile (EG AH Sprite).

I am so sick of the whole takumi tax and people bitching about the prices of the ae86's thing.

Do you bitch about ferraris being 10 times the expense of the common honda accord? They both do the same thing... and a honda can be made to be as fast as the ferrari, with less money.

The cars are getting scarce and people want them because they are a good car. The price will not go down. If you cannot afford it, go and buy an excel. Im sure you will have heaps of fun with its responsive chassis and rear drive Rolling Eyes

Shut the hell up about the price of ae86s. Say if a clean 86 with 4age and descent suspension goes for 7 grand. What else around that price range is going to provide the same experience? Maybe a silvia - if you like that kind of thing, but its still not the same as an ae86. If you think about it, they aren't really overpriced. If you fork out the money, you get it back anyway, its not like hyundais which depriciate.

blah blah blah. Go away.

10 to 15 is for one modded to the max. a clean stock one is worth 3 which is no to bad if it's for drift beause you don't have to pay 8 to 15 for a un modded car like with silvias or 180sx's which you would then have to go spend a lest 8 to get drift ready as well. so it make sense to me.

thats right it not what it's worth in real value. it popularity. there fore ae86's became more popular and expencive. when people relized the were good for drift. plus the shape was sik compared to other toyotas made around the same time. Or and shut up

i'm upset at people complaining about the price... for the last 2 years its been this way... Do you all NOT get the picture? AE86 Prices are, from this point in time... going to get MORE expensive. If you don't want to pay it... then you won't get to own an ae86.

I don't care what you would prefer... i also know people that would prefer an echo over a 200sx. The point im trying to make out of a 260z is that it's the same for their owners and fans. If you don't want to pay $15,000 for a 30yo datsun, then it's your loss... We all know the potential of the 260z... Just as we ALL know the potential of the ae86.

Just as we ALL know the potential of the ae86.

zactly... fwiw, spoontahs are quite exxy in japan too, even for stockers, but TE27's and the like are the same.. 7-8K for a stock mint one, and 15-20K for a modified one...
also minis are incredibly popular.. there's a car yard with maybe 20-30 minis there! and you see at least a few driving around each day... they are lso in the 6-10K bracket....

good examples are just getting harder to find.. every spoontah that gets modified for dorito work just makes an original clean one even more valuable.... and as Shiri says (nice avatar btw Wink ) they are only going to get more expensive (which is why i have two real sprinters Wink )

ya ya Garth, i know you have a real spoontah.. is just fun to play with dorito kiddies Wink

rofl

'spoontah is inanimate'? eh?

btw, ae86 an ae85 are identical in looks to the untrained eye. coupe and hatch both came in ae86 and ae85.

and no my car sounds pretty mean now with the TODA racing exhaust. Smile thanks for the nice words

Sprinters are expensive in japan? Thats not entirerly true.
Sure their are a few 100% restored models that go for 20 grand plus but the usual near stocker can be had for very cheap or even with a few mods.

http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k2043 5320

Lets put this into perspective:
japanese ae86 near stock has the following:
4age + efi running gear
Vented disks at the front and solid disks at the rear
LSD
And the cost is about $2200

Now have a quick look for the prices of sprinters available in australia.
People asking over $3500 for a complete stocker with a stuffed engine is not uncommon.
Our sprinters also have
4a-c boat ankor engine and NO efi running gear
solid disks at front and drums on rear
no lsd

And your telling us that sprinters are not overpriced? get real lol, as someone else said their just as over priced as rx3's r100's, 1600's, 240's etc. And its only going to get worse.

ironicly the throught that these cars are cheap is whats keeping a lot of people from buying them because they are not cheap due to popularity.

intensevil... with that auction you have the question the integrity of the seller and the quality of the car when there is only 2 days left on the auction, not one Q&A has been asked and not one bid has been put down, even at that price...

Remember, these are just auctions... That car may have one bid put down before the end of the auction at 100,000y and it still may not sell... It's entirely up the seller.

flip it 360 and this is what you get

http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e4844 2565

a reserve of 1,390,000... Sprinters are cheap? i guess you didnt tell this seller cause that is $16,000!

I've said this so many times in the last few weeks about imported sprinters. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Never a truer word was spoken when talking about Japanese 86's. Compare Japanese ae86 owners over the last 20 years, to australian ae86 owners over the same time. I know who'd i'd rather buy off... And i'd rather buy a 4ac rust free, never drifted ae86 for 4000... then spend another $8000 on importing something that has been treated like utter shit.

Want to buy something in the same condition of MOST australian sprinters?

http://www.carland86.com/list/levin.html

over 1000000 yen for every ae86 on that list... and what do you have? a 4age and a stock lsd.

http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n199 02896 350,000 yen or $4150

They are NOT exceptions to the rules... they are the ones in GOOD condition, just like MOST Australian AE86's. Japanese drivers aren't at all differnet to us. They want something in good condition? they pay for it...

You should also understand that Yahoo Japan, is not at ALL an indication of AE86 Prices. It is, 90% of the time private sellers, who want to get rid of their car. Hunt around at Japanese Car Yards and you will see, that it is near impossible to find something under 600,000y in the japanese sprinter market. And you should realise... that only a SELECT few of ae86 car yards sell on yahoo... Why? Because they don't need to auction off their cars to the highest bidder. People will pay it.

Intenseevil you fail to realise that it is an auction so the price change rapidly during the closing stages of the auction.

also
you picked a bad example,
http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k2043 5320
if you read the description, it has previous accident damage.

Then what about the countless number of ae86's that appear on the jspec auctions, once you take away all the other costs involved (shipping, taxes, insurance, jspec fee etc,) the car's actual cost is quite low.
What i'm trying to get at is that in australia we are paying a pretty huge premium just to have an ae86. ae71's are mechanicly identicle to aus spec sprinters yet they dont have an inflated price attatched to them. A few years ago before the drifting scene hit australia and people started to realise what these cars are aus spec examples in MINT condition could be had for peanuts in comparison to todays prices.
Honestly though, non of this even affects me because i've been turned off buying a sprinter for quite a while now, i just cant justify the inflated cost for a car thats inferiour to other cars in the same price bracket (talking about aus spec near stockies here, the modified ones actualy are priced quite well).
A cars only worth what people are going to pay for it, so i'm just going to sit back and laugh at all the people buying 4ac powered sprinters for 4 grand plus, best of luck to you Very Happy
