drift celica Tue, 26 July 2005 10:19 Go to next message
i have a 1982 RA-60 celica and i have plans in using it for drift, mainly because it is not a commonly used drift car here in australia but i have seen a few used in america.
I already have a reasonable suspension setup but the car majorly lacks power.
so basically i need to do an engine transplant. i have thought about a 1GGTE but i have heard they are not so good for drift. so i was thinking maybe a 4AG. non turbo would kinda be nice becuase i dont think i could pay the insurance at the moment.
any other suggestions would be good. also any other parts i need would be good. eg what LSD, and where to get it?
thanks heaps

a 4ag would be a no go in an RA60 they have fuck all torque and you are putting it in a heavier car than they came out in from factory, throw in the 1ggte and drfit away. A guy recently dropped a 1ggte into an Ra65 and was competing in the toyo drift nationals in qld his car is in the members ride thread have a look.

Why would a 1G-GTE not be good for drift?

A turboed 22R-E could work too. It's got a lot of torque...

i dunno i just heard that 1Gs arent good for drift.
my mate has a 1GGTE in his supra and its only putting out 120hp at the wheels and i am hoping for around 200kw at the wheels.
that is what put me off them but if 200kw is fairly possible then a 1GG is the go!
what about the jap spec celicas that came with a 4age(AA-60)? they have 4As.
anyway i think 1g sounds good
thanks guys

errr at a recent toymods dyno day emp 2tg put out 250rwkw in his 1ggte Ke30 running 23 psi untuned, it runs a TD07 turbo and custom plenum stock internals aftermarket management still running base maps with rich as fuck afr and still produced that much power, once tuned it'll make the same power on less boost.

I raise two questions. Is his car auto? Is his car sick? Smile

That's a low figure for a 1G. That said, 200rwkw isn't achievable on the factory turbos, but you wont need that much for a good reliable drift.

hey how about an 18RG bullet proff and you could turbo it and it would way almost 100kg lss then the 1G and that would make that F*&$@#R Fly sideways.

If you want 200kw why would you even consider a 4A? Is it because they're "good for drift"? Confused

Does it have to be Toyota? There are the obvious choice of Nissan engines, CA18 and SR20.

Yeah but CA's suck and SR's are expensive. I've been for a ride in Tim's Celica and its a hot drift car. Heaps of potential there. Plus he knows how to steer.

Even tho I doubt the point of me saying this, a 3S-GTE is a perfectly fine option if you want to make tonnes of power.

I'll be sticking one into my RA65 sooner or later (probably later this year actually)

hey dude,
what suspension have u got in the ra60 so far.

i can understand why u could ahve heard they were bad for drift, i heard that too...so i moved mine back 3 inches!

all this talk of power too, why spend a mint on a 3s-gte, go the cheapest option (1g-gte) and concentrate on making the diff and suspension package the priority

'1G is crap, you need teh RB20'
'1JZ is teh crap, u need teh RB25'
'Stick an SR in it'
'Holden V8s are crap, stick a Clevo in it'
'A V8? but it's only 4 litres - how you gonna make 400 horsepower from that without nitrous or a blower - and with stock rods?'
'Nah mate, this EFI stuff is no good for drags, it just ain't consistant enough'
'Best 4 potter? Me mate put a 2 litre in his Gemini... it ran 15.4!'

You decide for yourself which of the above statements (which are all things people have said to me, many more than once) are truth, and which are, er, opinions... Oh, and which are just plain utter crap Laughing If people tell you the 1G is no good for drift, ask them why. Then build the car, and start having some serious fun.

tim, i got front struts off a mate, not sure what they are, he said he thought they were koni. but they're nice and stiff and low, i like em. but then the suspension on the back is pedders sports ryder springs with pedders comfort gas shocks and they dont match the front in hight of stiffness. thats all so far.
any help you can offer is greatly appriciated.
thanks for all the responses

To be honest, if I was thinking about bang for buck, then grab a 1G-GTE.

The 3S-GTE is damn expensive (which is partly why I am taking so long because to save cash I got to do alot of it myself).
