I just bought the car and assume it runs on unleaded. But its an 84, I thought that cars around that time ran on leaded petrol. Do I need to put in that valve saver crap that replaces the lead nowdays?

All Jap engines since the early 70's were designed for unleaded fuel. It will run fine on regular ULP but you might get better results with premium and bumping the timing up a bit.

my corona is an 85 same motor 22re and i have run unleaded in it for over two years and so did my uncle befor me and its had no probs.
I generally run BP ultimate, as a i get much better economy and b better response and more power from the engine.

Ther RA65 specifies leaded for the RON, rather than the lead. Leaded was 96 RON, premium unleaded is 95 & regular unleaded is 91/92 IIRC. You might get pinging with regular unleaded and have to play with the timing.
My car used to be a lot happier on leaded/LRP, but these days now that it's tired, I'm not so sure.
