Aftermarket Pod Filters

Now as I was leisurely driving home down the Old Pac today I was pulled over by 2 Highway Patrol Officers for a "random" breath test.
Anyway first that happened was I was asked to get out of the car and pop the bonet, of course it was noticed rather quickly that I had a pod filter installed. Anyway the 2 guys were rather decent chaps, not commenting on ground clearance, exhaust or any of the other things they could have thrown at me, but they were quite adimant that I get the filter boxed(which I've been planning on for a while). Just before I drove away I was breath tested. Anyway I drove away and they generously didn't give me a defect notice.
Now, I'm wondering what the fines are if you actually get pulled over and you don't run into nice Officers like the ones I got today? I'd like to box the filter in the next few months, it's just when I can afford to do it.
I just need to do a "cost analysis" as to whether I need to fix this up right away, or can it wait 2 months?

depends if you get caught in the next 2 months ive driven arround for ages with an exposed pod filter with no problems then again i dont drive a supra...
Its not very hard at all to make a box yourself even if its a little dodgy until you can get the money together for a proper one to be made up

in qld you dont need a box just so long as it is secured to something , id ring ur department of transport and get the ruling on that , and just make something up temporarily, a m8 just got some perspex and got some angle and pop riveted it into a box lol. it works and doesnt look to bad.. just enough to keep them happy if it is indeed ilegal

Oh I know they are illegal, I'm just wondering as to whether the fine I'm gonna cop in the next 2 months is going to be cheaper than getting a decent box made up. Although I'm pondering bending some Aluminium up in a boxish shape myself.

Or put your standard airbox back on in the mean time if your really worried.
Making up a box really doesn't cost much. you can buy a sheet of aluminium from Bunnings for about $10.

first of, well done Alchemist.the first lesson in all of this is to show a bit of respect and it will go along way, exept if you get a really shocking cop,but they are few and far between.
make a box out of alloy sheet.easy to do with a vice and two lengths of alloy right angle{to sit in the vice jaws}.bend up the box and pop rivet it together.cheaper than getting defects cleared if there is a few defectable things on you car.

Yea I was really polite to them, I was having a chat to once of the Officers whilst the other was giving my car the once over, I just tried to ignore it, I knew what was there that wasn't sposed to be . For a moment I thought he wasn't going to mention it all together, but I spose he had to say something.
Anyway I think I'm going to try to make something myself, it'll have to wait until next weekend as I won't have time to make something til then, I'll make up an aluminium box with a nice feed of cold air via some aircon pipe from some vents in the front bar.

Yea I know.....It's just that I can't fit the resonators and all the stock plastic piping up because of the extractors heat issues....I guess I could just go from steel piping into the side of the factory air box, now I just need to get me one.....

Cool1 you keep saying that everyone is incorrect on this matter but have not shown anything to back it up.
Can you provide anything to back up your information? (I have not drawn any conclusions, I would just like to see some evidence for and against)

My information is directly from the Code of Practice.
I cant remember how its written in the book, but if you change the emission standards on your car in anyway you need to have it put through a strict emissions test. And replacing the air box with a pod is changing the emissions.
So if your car came from the factory with an air box, you cant legally fit a pod unless you get the emissions test.
This also goes for cars that have had an engine conversion. If the new engine you put in your car had an air box from the factory, it needs to be fitted!

Ok I have some more information.
DOT now doesn't care for people doing modification to their cars. This means if you fit a POD to you car, they will not say yay or nay.
So if you get pulled over by a cop who's in a shitty mood, he can defect you for the pod! Its then up to you to prove that the pod doesn't effect the emissions.

Highly modified engine vs stock engine will make a big intake restriction difference.
I will eventually get it enclosed.

i heard open pods are not illegal in nsw, police are just bastards!
i had my pod out in open for all to see on my old r31 pintara, i had a samll bracket securing the afm to keep it still, and no porblems ever arose! i even had a mechanic tell me it was perfectly legal and didnt need to bother boxing it in
my two cents...

So you had the emissions tested and nothing had changed?

decent pod filters do make a difference.
But your best way to get a very slight gain is to put your air box back on and get a TOMS or TRD replacement sports filter. should get 5-10hp flywheel extra plus you dont get any hass from the fuzz

I think most people read your first comment as:
"stock airbox makes same power as pod filter," rather than
"stock, airbox makes same power as pod filter"
