ST185 Wide vs Narrow body Thu, 28 July 2005 01:25 Go to next message
Can someone help me identify the difference between the narrow and wide bodied cars please. Are the front guards any different and how can I tell?
Much appreciated
Mark

Me thinks its only the rear guards that are flaired (wider)

Its only grey imports (2nd hand Jap import) that are narrow bodied.

Then again I could be wrong Embarassed Laughing Embarassed

Most of the JDM are narrowbody. They did sell the widebody in the JDM too...mostly as the Group A Rally version (which was called RC over there)

They differ in both the front and rear guards. There are flares in both.

If you have JDM GT4 guards...it's more than likely they are narrow body.

I was under the impression that the ST184, non GT4 was narrow, and the ST185 GT4 was wide, like a GTS skyline vs GTR.
So in the ST185 GT4, there was a narrow and wide?!?! Can a Celica yoda confirm this and maybe even pics?

In Australia...you are correct...184 was narrow, and 185 was wide. But these questions were about JDM GT4's...which were both.

I'm no yoda, but can confirm that.

Widebody is always a better bet anyway - least you know its an australian delivered , or a Group A ( or RC or calros sainz )

better turbos in these for starters , then ceramic powahs jobbies that come on the JDM yo models ..

disadvantages - widebody is a bit heavier - harder to fine panels for

Widebody looks SO much cooler with nice rims too Wink Factory flares Wink

I'll see If I can get a photo of BeeJ's CS GT4 next to my JDM Narrow body.

there's a fair amount of difference in the shape of the guards.
+the narrow bodies come standard with 14" wheels Sad

Jordan

P.S: leave my cermaic turbine wheel alone Wink

The JDM Narrow body cars were ST185R model code and the wide body were ST185H model code.
This only applies to JDM cars AFAIK.

If you see a narrow and widebody ST185 together you will see the difference quite quickly, the difference is especially noticable at the rear.

Ah very interesting....
So in Australia the narrow bodied imports would be rarer so the price tage would be higher? Hmmm funny thought...
No such thing applied to the 205 right?

You will find it is the other way around...
narrow body = import = cheaper.
wide body = price based on aus delivered prices.

Here's a question for the trainspotters amongst us: What month and year did JDM ST185's go to widebody based production, and how can you tell what month and year a JDM ST185 is produced in?

did it change in 92/93 (JDM/AUD respectively) when they went from series one tail lights to series 2 tail lights? (ie smoked with border vs non smoked & non border) and the other changes?

The closest I've come to a differentiation is here:

http://www.allwheelmotion.com/arvinfaq.htm

If you scroll down to overall width in the Dimensions section, you'll see the GT4 with width 1690mm (I assume narrow body?!?) ends production in August, 1991. The wider GT4 at 1745mm (I assume wide body?!?) continues production till August, 1993 - so can we assume all JDM GT4's produced between the dates of 8/91 - 8/93 are actually wide body?!?

Next important question: How do you determine the month and year of production in a JDM vehicle?

Just punch your VIN into the online EPC... http://japancats.ru/toyota/
Note: You'll probably need to find yourself a Russian proxy server to get it to let you in.
