may be a stupid question, but just out of curiosty do aftermarket ecus use knock sensors, inparticular EMS stingers.

Aftermarket knock control is very difficult to setup. The knock characteristics are different for every engine so it's quite hard to reliably detect. Some of the ECU's at the upper end of the price scale have knock control but I've heard mixed results about their usefulness.
