engine tuneing Mon, 01 August 2005 13:42 Go to next message
hi i've read some post's where people talk about taking there car places and getting it tuned...what does this acctually mean?

is it where some guy just plays around with your ecu settings to give you more power? or is the whole deal of modding your engine?

On modern EFI cars there ain't much that can be tuned.

Maybe adjust ignition timing + change spark plugs.

Not easy to change ECU settings with factory ECU.

Yes.

Toyota ECU's can't be fiddled with, so a "tune-up" means checking/replacing consumables and that's about it.

when most people talk about a tune, they've got aftermarket engine management.

At almost 8 posts per day, I would say both as well.

EFI doesn't necessarily discount your car from being tuned just because of a factory ecu. I got 11 rwkw from my 7M with only a fuel pressure reg & timing adjustments. It was the guys at Unigroup. He's actually pretty damn good.

on the topic

in neutral, my car is meant to be idling at 750rpm, but atm, it's idling at around 680ish

I don't have an idle control screw, as it's computer controlled

how much will it cost me to get that fixed? idling is rough atm, and it's a pain, but i'm very short on cash

Well there is also the proverb (or similar)

"
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
"

What we are trying to do is supply you with the skills to find the answer to most/if not all of your questions in the future Wink

Cheers

somewhere between 5 cents (rounded up from 1 cent) to a $1000.
When did you last have a look at the air cleaner ? Have you tried a fuel injector cleaner ? Have you asked a mechanic ? Have you tried cleaning the throttle body ? Have you had a look at the spark plugs ? How about the spark leads ? Have you thought about another car that you can work on ?!?

air cleaner = air filter? air filter changed 3000 km's ago

Tried fuel injector cleaner, new spark plugs and new spark plug leads

Have asked a mechanic, who didn't notice anything wrong with it, and told me to change the fuel filter, as it may solve the problem. So i changed the fuel filter, but no luck.

Another car to work on? This is my normal driving car.

Well, urm, something that has the words "Throttle Body Cleaner" on it Rolling Eyes But seriously, off the top of my head i can't think of the name of one (or any of them for that matter).
How about checking the vacuum lines. You could even have a blown intake manifold gasket.

visual inspection of the vacuum lines seeem to be ok, is there a good method to check them?

cleaned the throttle body, and seems to be no real difference.. it wasn't that dirty to begin with

what else could be wrong?
