check the voltage, and voltage during cranking (ie when you turn the key and the voltage goes so cos the battery is flat that the lights dim out).

meh, dud battery or dud alternator or left lights on...

Everything you stated tells me either the battery is flat of its own accord, or the alternator isn't charging the battery and it is flat

k, when i had the car hooked up with jumper leads it wouldn't make the stupid clicky noise, but when i tried to turn the car over it would jsut stay dormant and do nothing.. so it might be the battery hasn't got enough CA... wat size battery is reccomened.. i read it was about 600CA are required for a 7MGTE.. the bettery on there now is onyl 460CA

starter motor has burnt out causign a short, or there is a short in the line from the ig switch to the solenoid, so when you go to start it shorts out and burns a fuse/fusible link..
solenoid wire come off and earthing to exhaust perhaps?

drag out the multimeter and start probing.... or bend over and let the autoelec probe you Razz

so u reckon the 600CA has fucked up the starter motor ? or u rekcon the starter motor was just fucked to start with and the battery was no issue.. cause when i went to turn it over all the times it would simply do nothing, but the display would come on when in ON position. Although the original battery was low on voltage, i hadit tested and it still came through as having enough juice to turn it over. so i spose next thing is... how much is a starter motor for a 7MGTE

You have a bad earth. Things just don't stop working like that. My RA60 currently has a 380cc battery which was quite fine cranking a 7MGTE. Stop worrying about a bigger battery, or a new starter motor. Fix the earth.

open the bonnet of the car..

look for the earth strap between battery and car body, and between car body and engine.

surely you can do that?

yes obviosuly i can do that... looking at wat is currently available the negative connection also has the earth connected to itand its about a 1mm thick wire, i can't see any connection between the engine and car body, not saying it doesn't have one, just can't c it

Re: HELP! Tue, 02 August 2005 13:49 Go to previous messageGo to next message
i would like to see that you have an earth cable that is similar in size to the strater motor cable, both between the batterys negative terminal and the car body, and also between the motor and the car body (or the motor and the neg terminal if you are picky)

if there is no earth connection between the motor and the battery, how the fuck is the starter motor meant to return 1-200amps of current?

heres a quickie for you, grab a coupel of sets of jumper leads, run them between the neg terminal and the motor and the body, see if it makes any difference... and clean the inside of the battery terminals and also the batteries posts...

Man, that car of yours sounds like it has some serious issues.

What oldcorollas ment about your starter motor could be burnt out is, when you have a flat or low charged battery and keep trying to start it, it will burn out the starter instead. I had a VK calais, and the exact same thing happened, one minute it'll start, the next, i'm up for a new battery and starter. If it's fixed now, no stress (until next time).

No, once a starter has given up completly, that's it, no more, dead. If you go and crank it over, even with a brand new battery and it cranks real slow, get the starter seen to ASAP. My mechanic had his fully charged jumper pack on the VK when it gave up, and the only noise it made was a click from the solinoid.

The VK sounded like a flat battery every time you started it, and in the end, it was the starter and a battery.

well, that could be a number of things. Back to basics. Check all fusable links, wires to/from coil and distributor (if has one, not to familiar with supras Crying or Very Sad) earth strap, between engine and car body, fuel pump and wires/fuse.

If it's cranking and turning over, but won't fire, then it's gotta be something with either fuel or ignition.

does it still run a single coil, or does it run a coil pack ? It could be your coil is shot and not producing spark. Other then that, i'm fresh out of ideas. Sorry... Wink

well, the only things i can think that could be stopping it from firing is, fuel and spark. Check your fuel pump is working and get it tested, it might work and you may hear it, but your pressure could be shit. Fuel blockage maybe.

we didn't have an indepth look into it, but when we checked there is no spark coming form the coil packs... i tried to fit a 600CA battery into the limited space and i was pushing all sort of wires located around the battery out of the way.. and might have disconnected something around there... i have a feeling its a lose wire... would there be anything else within that circuit leading onto the coil pack that might cause it to fail to spark ?
