Hilux 7M conversion Thu, 14 July 2005 06:50 Go to next message
Hi guys,

The time has finally come to convert the old 22R in my 4WD hilux
to a 7M-GE EFi 6 cylinder so I can still drive on 45deg angles
and the really steep hill-climbs that have the 22r conking out.
I have all the following bits so far.
1 x 7M-GE Engine complete.
1 x 7M-GE Wiring Loom.
2 x 5M-GE engine mounts (am told these line up with hilux mounts)
1 x W56 Bellhousing
1 x 5M-GE Flywheel (off a MA60 manual supra)
1 x 5M-GE clutch and pressure plate
1 x MA60 throw out bearing and clutch fork.
I have an ECU lined up aswell so is there anything else I
should get before starting the conversion??

Any tools I should get beforehand to make the swap easier??

Talking to all the hilux boffins on another forum, they say
the easiest way to do it is to remove the motor, leaving the
gbox and transfer case in the truck, then swing the motor up
to the g'box, as g'box AND 4x4 transfer case are VERY HEAVY.

I have a 2.5" body lift and about 4" of suspension lift so
getting under the car ain't hard. Just finding a hoist that
is tall enough will be the trick. Could I use this big tree
out the front of my place as a hoist??
Remember, I'll be cuttin' the radiator support right out to make it easier again to swing the motor into place.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Bart

-spigot bearing
-given that 7Ms have a predisposition for BHGs - get radiator flushed
-extra thermo fans to cope with heat?
-new coolant pipes (where required)
-power steer pump and piping?
-clutch hard/soft line (or is 22 also on passenger side of bellhousing)
-new clutch slave (why not, is cheap)
-alternator & connector & connection to chassis loom?
-oil cooler & lines to suit (if the block has this plumbed in)
-ditto for power steering
...

fuel pump? get a BIG radiator if you do a bit of low 1st gear extreame stuff also get a good clutch (any reason you didnt get a 7m-ge flywheel and clutch? )

I would pop the head get it surfaced and put a fresh gasket and arp studs to be safe not fun geting stuck down a 4wd track, i used todo a bit of 4wd'ing with my brother and i actualy learnt to drive in a G60 patrol!

also get a good exhaust system 2.5 inch mandrel bent and take time to make a nice engine pipe(s) (the two pipes about 1.5m long same size as the outlet on the manifold joined into a 2.5 inch collector should be good for torque) and use a 4 inch truck muffler thats not a strait thru design as if you have a strait thru muffler on a 4wd you start bushfires!

if your budget can streach to it get a moroso oil accumulator

DONT USE THE TREE!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the info!
additional to my first post,
I now have a
power steer pump bolted up,
air conditioner pump bolted up
and alternator was already connected to the engine
and all stuff was working prior to removal.

I also managed to grab the radiator from the cressida
doner vehicle, and it is pretty clean actually.
How much to get this flushed roughly??

The only reason I bought the 5M-GE flywheel and clutch
clutch fork and was that they were cheap, and a fellow
toymodder threw them in when I bought his MA60 seats.
I think I need to use a hilux clutch for it to mate to
the hilux gbox, or can I just go with a supra clutch into
the hilux box??

With the head, I was thinking of just throwing this motor
in as is, as I have just bought a cressida with a shmick
rebuilt engine, that I actually want to swap to a 1JZGTE
eventually sometime after the hilux is done,
and then I'll put the good 7M-GE into the luxie and use
the old 7MGE for parts?
Considering I bought this 7M-GE for $100 spending $$$ getting
the head done and all that seems a bit excessive.
I just wanna get it going with this guinea pig motor,
then upgrade to the good 7M once everything is sorted.
What do you think??

Cheers,
Bart

Like Allan said your vehicle was setup for a Carby engine so you will need to look at EFI baffled fuel tank and a fuel pump.
