What is the best way to make cheap calls to overseas places, in particular, America? I was thinking that there might be a special phone plan.
Has anyone used that thing called VIOP (i think its called that)
?
It goes through your internet connection. I think you buy a special headset and phone.
Anyway, thoughts?

try a proggy called skype and just get yourself a cheapo headset
if you want to make real calls check out a few ISPs/Telcos and they have some decent VOIP packages

i use skype between japan and US, and Japan and Aus, and quality seems to be good...
it's about 3c a minute i think for skypeout, which is better than my Optus global calling card.. which is 60c/min (damn hour long phone calls to parents )

not too bad, it would still be cheaper to get one of those prepaid long distance calling cards... a friend of mine used to buy them to talk to his gf who is in america at the moment, and he got a lot of talk time for not much money...
just get them from a newsagent...

Becarefull using projectgizmo. I have already submitted a complain as to their network policies. After using the service provided by SIPPHONE (gizmo bullshit) i am receiving around 10k of traffic at my router interface from their proxys. This traffic is persistent and contant for some time. This is a long after the app (gizmo bullshit) has been closed.
Has anyone found this to be the case ?
Its been around 1hr of constant traffic from 198.65.166.131 (proxy01.sipphone.com). 10k of constant traffic is a joke by any measure. My wonderfull ISP (people telecom) dont want to do anything about it, so best beware.
----------------
On a seperate note, has anyone tired the sound quality from the msn voice facility ?
----------------
@#$k that gizmo BS for the time being.
My 2 cents

I got the thing to work. On my laptop - with the recessed microphone - the sound quality wasnt the best and there was some delay. Even with the mic, it was better than i originally expected. But the persistent traffic from their server is something i can do without. 10k bit for 5 hours before it stopped. What crap. Still no reply from em either.

I think it's AAPT who have some call cap plan like the mobile call cap plan. You pay a max of $50 I think it is, no matter how much you talk (some sort of fair usage policy would obviously apply) to a select range of countries (USA included).

If an interent phone isn't an option, try a phone card. Shop around - some are really good, some suck - depends on their rates to different countries, and whether they have connections.
I recommend Day Break, which is what I use to call the UK - it's nuts cheap.
