entering AE86 in Targa tasmania Fri, 12 August 2005 01:03 Go to next message
Evening all,

asking for a guy at my work,

would it be possible to enter a AE86 (or some other two door corolla) in targa.

also, he wants to use a 2 litre engine, even though i told him a 4AGE would provide ample power in modded form. i guess a BEAMS 3SGE would be pretty cool.

answers appreciated, as i might get to drive it!

anyone feel free to correct me on this, but my understanding was that if you were to enter and older (classic) car that it has to be in kind-of factory trim, plus all the saftey gear that is.

i guess would have to find out exactly what the different classes allow

My understanding (somewhat limited perhaps), is this.

If you want to enter Targa Tas then you must satisfy one of
A: Have a good chance of winning it (experienced and talented driver in a fast car)
B: Are driving a classic car. As in one that will go down in history and is very close to factory (Apparently the only Dat 1600 racing recently was a rare 2door)
C: Have a huge pile of cash

So in my opinion, unless your friend is driving a mint JDM Levin stuffed with the needed safety gear then he is going to be struggling.

Hen

PS, a pretty big pile of cash is needed whatever the case.

ahh tis one of my dreams to compete in targa someday. But yeah they have very strict guidelines for entry, may be better off still building the car but doing different dutton rally events, thye let anything run and its a lot cheaper than targa, still not cheap but not uber expensive. Very Happy

from memory, Targe is over $5K to enter - if they like the look of your car and your racing history.

He has done targa before, in an escort, didnt do to badly from memory (ie finished)

i think the issue will need to be tackled from the targa angle, rather than the toyota angle.

I found this guide to entering Targa Tasmania quite useful:

That is a great article. Maybe my views were a bit harsh.

It would be great fun to do. Now where's my 2000GT...

there are a few cars in targa which are not factory spec at all... there was an N13 with a CA18 turbo it depends which class u go in... the thing with most targa cars is they are all mostly sports cars anyway... Sierra cosworths, GTR's, GTiR's, porsche i think u get a good idea! did see a gun metal JZA80 TT and god wat a boat that was!

its a big boys toys club in Targa

Classic Adelaide is a bit friendlier but they are a ot more choosy on what cars can enter

and yes - 5 and a bit thousand dollars minimum to enter the event , without including the cost to prepare the car , travel there , accomidation , time off work , insurance etc etc ..

it adds up real quick

So far to prepare for classic adelaide for example - its cost my driver ( who owns the car ) well in excess of 10K to get it entered and prepared - not including major mechanical work, or the purchase of the car ( he now also purchased a backup Mint original RS2000 Mk2 escort so to guarantee us a runner this year ..)

Were dealing with an original Perana capri though - which has heaps more chance getting into event like this then a sprinter with a updated , non factory motor Smile

personally without turning a key or steppinginto the car - its cost me about $1500 so far in equipment + assorted fee's to be approved

what about the new 'East coast Targa' ..... I think this event has just been, although not sure...

You can buy a pre prepared 206 (I think) puegeot for around 25K ready to race for targa in one class. but if you want to race outright you'd better have Packers cheque book when you consider who you're up against.

Start in east coast classic and classic adelaide and try the clasic car club in sydney, they have numerous events no only for classic cars but in good spirit of competition.

you can compete or not compete but still enter...
its called the touring class, this year there was a convertable celica in the tour group so i dont see why a sprinte cant get in. now cmon, no safety gear, realativly cheap (compared to competing) looks the way, and i think their desprate for entrants.

go and enter, you'll just be drifting your ass throughout tasmania.. hehe
there was a s15 looked like a full drift car that entered; he was pretty slow but majority of his time was doing drifts and showing off to the crowd haha

Enter Rally of Tasmania, its bitumen still, runs many of the same roads as targa does i believe and a much more sane entry fee.

Cheers

is the RoT a state or australian rally championship? ARC rallys seem to have rigourous scrutineering so you spend up big on preparation anyway?

but - hey it would be fun to do a road race - tho towing home to Qld the most-likely outcome would be a bit expensive. How many badly-bent rally cars get left behind in tassie after the Targa and RoT ?

Dont know the full details, just remember hearing about it before.
I know that the dude in the R34 and jim richards did it last year
