Whats the best project track car? Mon, 15 August 2005 11:07 Go to next message
hey guys, me and a friend of mine are looking into building up a budjet track car for us to take up to mallala every now and then and just have some fun in. we've got a bit of mechanical knowledge and acesse to tools and a workshop but it's sometin we'd rather do ourselves if we can and not just pay for someone else to do it. we're gona avoide turbos as they cost too much if they fuck up, and then you've got to screw around with ecu's and it becomes too much of a head fuck. so we're looking for something light, good handeling, a bit of poke and is'nt gona be a bitch to work on or get parts for. a carbie fed car would prob. be better. we've got a budjet of about $7-8k incl the cost of the car. what do you guys think? and dont everyone say a sprinter!

ps. it doesnt have to be a toyota either, although it would be nice!

As stated, no 'best'.

But here's some stuff I've thought about:

For that money, I might look into a Nissan Silvia CA18DE. around $5000ish last time I checked (but that was a while ago).

You get:
- IRS
- Decent engine (although I can't say there'll be much N/A mod support for the CA18DE)
- EFI
- RWD
- Low rust percentage
- Goooood support for coilovers, breaks, other suspension gear, panels (as it shares a chassis with the SR20 Silvia, and 180sx which are both very popular).

Perhaps if you want a carby, a KE30 or something? Although that's a live rear, and not IRS. You could always put carbies on an EFI engine (god knows enough people do it with 4A-GEs in japan).

Got to be a datsun stanza with L20 and webbers or sumin...

cheap light (lighter than a 1600), reliable & surprising.

Once u factor in slicks brakes etc.. u r gonna need plenty of change from the initial purchase.

Not interested in buying someone already done?

Does it have to be street rego? Could get a race only import from japan reasonably cheap.

Maybe consider looking on www.my105.com . Might be worth weighing up if its cheaper to build it yourself or buy something ready to roll. Half the fun is making it though I guess.

You can bring in a sw20 mr2, for 4k race use only...perfect for the track.

wilbo & i had this very dilema until an MZ10 rolling shell came our way ... so the plan is (after finishing building) to enjoy sprints and some small club meets Wink

The car is cheap enough to wreck (without too much tears and anguish) if it gets badly pranged.

As we both have ma61's, it'll be a learning experience on building a race car, plus a parts doner if wrecked.

Would suggest heading to sprint days to see who races what and then running ideas past some race car builders/engineers to guage their opinions/thoughts.

one of my thoughts was always AW11 + GZE conversion. NEVO pulley upgrade as a bit of extra cheap power, you'll have a sub 1000kg car with bags of torque. turbo would obviously be preferable, but that's putting you into a higher price range

would need a full suspension + brake overhaul (but so would any real track car).

Before you look into a track car, you should look at what class you want to compete in (if you want to do it officially)...

I may be a little (ok, maybe alot) biased, but I would say AW11 NA.

They are:
Cheap - you can pick one up under $5k.
Reliable - 4AGE is pretty hard to break!
Improvable - plenty of things you can do to make them faster
Competitive - In a class against MX5s etc.
Fun - Don't believe all they hype, they aren't that difficult to drive. Yes, they are harder than a FWD corolla or even a RWD AE86, but have great balance.

And as a bonus, its always great fun when you have people come and ask you if its turbo/supercharged to say "nah mate, standard motor"

Just my $0.02!

Pssht, it'd weigh like 1200-1250kg with a decent LSD and uprated brakes. Just give it some proper cams and let it sing Razz
