300ZX

Anyone know how fast 300ZXs are?
I had a run with one the other day and it was even through to about 80km/h. Not really long enough to be able to tell much though.
Just wondering 'coz I thought I'd get hammered. This was after 1.5 hours on the freeway in 40 degree temps too which meant my car wasn't running too great.

The manual versions are pretty quick, but the auto ones are slower than a twin-turbo Soarer.

The twin turbo version is supposed to do (as said) 5.5-6 seconds. The NA version is supposed to do about 6.8 seconds.
The auto ones are still pretty fast too!

You were probably running against a non turbo.
You can tell if its turbo or non by looking at the front low nose/bumper.
Turbos have air intake/inlets on each side below the front bumper, non turbo's dont.
I almost bought a 300ZX Fairlady instead of the MR2, they are not a bad car considering their age.
One thing that put me off was the engine bay.
Have you seen how tight a fit it is?
There is close to no space for mods.

ha! mods? you're dreaming right?
it took a friend and me 20 minutes just to change a damn headlight globe, there's so little room.
admittedly, john from UAS has a zed that will trash almost anyhting on the road ... but it's a long way from stock

anything's possible, and it wouldn't suprise me.

Yeah there is so little room for mods its not funny!! I think that is one reason that 300ZXs are not very popular at the drags in Japan also... the engine is a great package though!! Wonder how the R35 is going to be for room with its V6 TT??

Well in the Z31 models there were the special 300ZR range which instead of a VG20DET actually had an RB20DET, there was a Z32 300ZR as well but this was only a naturally aspirated RB20DE.
Nissan officially released these, and there are still some floating around japan I think, there is barely any visible differences.

Well the WRX would definetly have it off the line. That's what the WRX is good at... sprints. Don't really know what would happen after that. 0-100 times are in favour of the 300zx i believe? (WRX being a 6.2?)
Crusin on the freeway at about 80, drop to 3rd and i'd say the 300zx would be well in front.

You can definitely 'RB your Z' on a Z31. As Mikey said before, they came out in Japan with the RB20. Use the crossmember out of that and put whatever RB motor you like in. You'd probably have to do a bit of grinding on the RB26 sump though. All Z Spares in Thornleigh had the complete front cut for one (RB20DET) a while ago. This is one option I may eventually look at. Zoom likes to bag the shit out of the VG30DETT, but if you treat them right and obey the service schedule, you generally won't have a problem with them.
On the topic of how fast a Z32 is, a guy at work has a TT with a twin 3" stainless exhaust and boost raised to 18psi. The thing absolutely hauls.
