Random Idle Thu, 18 August 2005 23:11 Go to next message
HI Guys,

I have an ae82 rolla with a 4ac around 310,000k
Got a weird problem that decided to surface last night.
Driving home from work, doing down a side road, slowing to an intersection, and the engine just dies.
Weird, restart, continue driving.
I pull up to the lights, and notice the car running like shit.
I shift into N,and notice the idle is around 600 rpm!
Normal idle i had at about 1200 or so.

I get the car home and tweak with the idle adjustment to get it to idle back to 1200.
With it back to 1200, i rev it up and it decides to now idle at 2000.
Take it for a drive, and the engine is VERY stuttery, running very unsmooth and randomly idleing from 700 - 2000 and not really behaving correctly.

Ive recently replaced the entire ingnition system
Distrib ~ 10000k
Leads, Plugs, Coil ~ 1000k

Im thinking the carbie might have some issues... but no idea.
ALso thought it could be a vacumn leak as when on the brakes i can feel weird vibrations, possibly indicating a vacumn leak, or that my POS is on its last legs Razz

Anyone experience the same problems or have any ideas as what it could be.
Getting very fed up with my car atm, seriously thinking of ditching it in favour of another DD...
Anyone got a cheap reliable 2-3k car? Razz

my ae82 4age has been idling up to 2000, and down to 800 lately. i just had another engine installed as the old one seized, and im getting the oxygen sensor replaced today (from my old engine), which is causing the check engine light to come on sometimes, and it's running pretty crap too
ill get back to you when i get it back this afternoon

talking with a few poeple its seems that its most likly either my fuel filter, which i hav never changed, meaning it could be over 100000k's( Confused ) ... so ill get a new one of those, or more likly, that the carby is in need of a good clean.

if i can be bothered, ill rip it apart this weekend and give the carby a clean and maybe whateva else i can find.
fuel filter ill assume is an easy procedure. i havnt looked, but ill assume they are befour the fuel pump, so are fairly simple to exchange.

as for the vibrations in the brake pedal.... i might do a fliud bleeding... but not really that converning atm.

ill post how i go
cheers

seems to be fixed

put on a new fuel filter, old one looked fairly aged, but seemed fairly unclogged

also got some carby cleaner, which i ran that though the carby, and removed alot of build-up.
easy instructions, clean most of it off on idle, however rough it is.
then give it some gas, and do it again.

alls left to do is give it a nice idle tune, and all seems to be well.

if it does it again, ill have to rip apart the carby, but the cleaner seems to have done its job nicely!

Idling could be an earthing issue. Clean and tighten all earths in the engine bay - particularly one on the back of the inlet manifold which has two black and white wires coming out of the loom under the carburettor - quite hard to see. Also one behind the fuse box - best to undo the nuts and take the fuse box off to see it.
Vibration can be flat spot on the tyres, loose wheel bearings or if you don't feel it through the steering wheel at all it is more likely warped rotors - most noticeable under light brake pedal pressure and goes away as you press harder.
