Superhuman feats you have endured. Thu, 18 August 2005 11:31 Go to next message
I did one just last week.

I skulled 1500 mL of nasogastric feed (this is the grotesque shite that we put down feeding tubes) in about 3 minutes for the princely sum of $380 (most of the ICU folk put in $10 each just to see me chuck - which I didn't). I then topped it off with a pint of delicious celebratory Guinness.

What's your superhuman feat?

thats awesome Laughing the paper mache p00 the next day would have been a cracker too Laughing

Here is a couple of feats I have endured, they will probably only make sense to a few (GT should get them):

1. several episodes of ventricular tachycardia (heart rates of 240bpm plus) fixed with RFA (radio frequency ablation) twice occurring whilst a long way from anywhere and just having to sit it out hoping things would sort themselves out Confused .

2. 2 small bowel resections with the second one possibly going to be a stoma fitment (but luckily not, stoma = bad Sad ). Then after recovering from the second op (cut from bottom of rib cage to below the belt line for both ops) being told both ops were a waste of time due to misdiagnosis.

3. battling on with life for years whilst having a red cell count of 36 (normal range 138 - 155 or something like that?) This one amazed the doctors the most as I appeared to be coping pretty well. After 8 units of blood I felt like freakin superman Very Happy

4. making a clean break to my radius in my right arm and doing manual labour for a week before getting an xray, then thinking arh fuggit it'll get better without a cast. It wasn't until 6 months later it was able to take my weight Rolling Eyes

There are other stuff along the eating drinking themes but I will let some other post up their funny shite to read.

Not superhuman but me and username "johne" ate 10 cheeseburgers in confidence (I only managed to number 7!) and johnny ate the full 10. Oh yeh, and we weren't allowed to drink ANY drinks, so it just got drier, and drier till we vomited chewed balls of cheeseburgers!

indeed that stuff is a bit gross. after my 3 month coma (in which i was beeing fed the stuff through the tube up my nose), anyways a while after they took the trachy out the feeding tube blocked up. i didnt let them put the tube back up my nose and told them i would drink it, as i did with a straw every time they brought it in to me. i wasnt going to have that damn tube shoved up my nose while i was awake!!

Dude, i understand why you weren't taking that tube back... I remember when they took the breathing tube out after my maxcillofacial surgery. It felt like the doctor was dragging a squid fishing lure up my throat and was pretty fucken nasty.

Anyway... i'm one of two people in Australia that is living with my particular muscle conditiion. It is so rare for people to survive past 8yrs old that there's only two of us at the moment. For the record I have a Congenital Muscular Myopathy (Caps Disease). Generally sufferers of this disease die or respiratory failure when they are young. In short, their bodies grow too big for their breathing muscles to cope with. Is that a valid superhuman feat?

nope... more likely to die hooning through traffic in my mini. Laughing

Good thing is that it's not degenerative... so all signs point to a normal(ish) life for a while yet. Gotta rely on a BiPAP machine at night time though. Tests showed that without it i would have been in serious trouble in about 3 years time. Night time carbon dioxide levels in the blood were progressively rising as the years went on. One day I simply wouldn't wake up. Neutral

Edit: but the BiPAP machine has regulated the respiration and is reversing the problem so long as i keep using it. Wink

Drank 2L of cordial (diluted) in 1 go.

Drank enough alcohol that I had to get my stomache pumped (when I was 17). AND when the ambulance bill came I hid it from mum till she said "oh that reminds me, I saw an ambulance bill round here somewhere" "really? you sure you weren't watching M*A*S*H?". She still doesn't know.

While being thrown out of StPat's tavern I got away from 2 tongan bouncers and lifted a 3rd (who had me in a headlock).

Oh and also did it 13 times one day and 18 times total that weekend (including friday). Those were the days...

when you only used your right hand?

Very Happy

seriously: how about drinking >$70 worth of cider at Livid Festival the year Souxie and the Banshees played and was standing until midway thru their set (last of the night).

(i arrived with about $80, a ticket and smokes, i ate two kebabs, drank all day then bludged a lift home after realising i had drunk my cab fare.)

i later discovered that Doc's are vomit proof as i apparently left them in the front lawn as a sort of grave marker ... so they sat there stewing for about 36 hours (when i felt confident enough to return to walking) before i found them.

Oh yeah, I forgot... i had two drain tubes, on on each side of my jaw, to drain excess blood... they were only small but when they were pulled out... FIRE is what it felt like. The surgery was not related to the muscle disease, it was to correct and excessive overbite (however the overbite was probably caused by weaker than normal jaw muscles).

Depending on what mood I'm in I consider myself lucky or unlucky. I wish I was normal but I'm glad I'm not as bad as some. Wink

i can deffinatly relate to them drain tubes, had one either side of my guts when they did the transplant to drain excess blood like yours. the one on the right hand side came out not too bad (still didnt tickle), but the nurse nearly had to put her feet up against me and pull like a woman possesed to get the left hand side one out, man FIRE is a good discription. i swore prity bad when the poor lass did it.

Um going into the bathroom after my dad has dropped a shit thats pretty superhuman.
My eating habits, i have only been to hospital once for a spiral fracture of the tibia nothing much, you guys are freaks.

I have been hit in the head about 5 times by a cricket ball and not suffered any damage, my head is pretty hard. Best one had to be when i was playing a game and the seniors were in the next field one of them cracked a six and sconed me first bounce in the head. I had no idea it was coming and either did anyone else concentrating on my own game.

OK. Might not sound like much after reading some of the above. But I get out of bed every day (you have to really know me to understand the significance of this) and manage to pick up & look after my 2 youngest grandkids after school every day.
Plus do all my own house work, cooking ect. Then try to keep my truck looking good.

Laughing Laughing I have twice been told I would probably be essentially bed ridden for life or that I may be able to lead a "relatively normal" life as long as I was on some crack whore drugs.

I am now up to about 15 years of seeing specialist all over this country and they still have not diagnosed my disease other than to classify it as an autoimmune disorder. I also have two specialists writing a paper currently (should be published shortly) about my ongoing problems and such.

Ongoing battles like this (and even tougher battles like SIMDOG is taking on....damn best of luck mate) make you look at life from a different perspective, I essentially never sit still, I don't like to "waste" my time as you never know when your number is up or when you might not be able to continue to do the things you enjoy Wink .

The past 12 months I have been in the best health in my entire life....good health, you don't appreciate it until it's gone.

hell yeah, worst feeling/pain, some nut case across from my bed in the ward pulled his catheter straight out WITHOUT letting the fluid filled bladder down!!! The medical staff were flabergastered at his feat (he was an alcoholic with mental issues pf some sort and had been run over while drunk) I think his feat was pretty damn impressive Laughing

I try not to complain (or sound like I am complaining) because like you said some people out there really do have it tough. I reckon I have it pretty good really, could be worse Wink

Back to superhuman feats:

At uni in our 3rd year it was tradition to participate in a drinking comp (in the Uni Bar in front of a huge crowd), the event was called Pewter Night. You had to drink a pewter full of flat beer every x number of minutes, it seemed easy at first then it got harder and harder. If you spewed you were out, but you could get back in by doing a "wrong act" eg drinking your own spew/urine, drinking someone elses spew, nudie run through the bar etc. I am a soft drinker and only made 4 pewters and hurled on the 5th (flat warm beer aint my thing).

The hard core winner managed to put away 12 pewters of beer and didn't throw up until 2nd place threw up all over them, I thought that was a pretty amazing feat especially considering the winner was a CHICK (technically female but rougher than most blokes)! Shocked

To the guys with chronic medical conditions, that sucks the big one. Great to see you guys pushing on despite all the downers. Smile 1500 mL of NG feed is nothing compared to all the rest.

At uni, we used to have trolley races. The person pushing had to skull a pot of beer and the person in the shopping trolley had to eat some vile substance (usually dog food). My mate and I usually came second - he would invariably chuck (automatic exclusion unless you drank your spew - which he would do but then I would spew).

rollaboy, that looks like the kind of drawing you see stuck to the fridge with a magnat next to a pic of a kid with down syndrome.

Last year at uni (1st year), my best mate and i became known as the 2 guys that got pissed and played pool at the bar. On the 1st day back, we got shouted 2 jugs each which we finished in deadset 15min or so. Ended up putting $50 on myself to beat my mate....and won eventually Razz

Great days. Laughing

endure serisouly thou broke cuboid bone in left foot
had it misdiagnosed as only a sprain and to try and walk it off
tried that with physio for 6 weeks b4 the physio asked 4 the x rays as there was no improvment to discover the fracture in the cuboid bone...6 weeks after it broke and id been walkign around on it ...or trying to at least wondering wtf was wrong with me

Exactly the same thing happened to my dad... Dang medical professionals.. Like the nurses at Canberra hospital that had to try three times to get a drip into my arm...

I broke a few ribs in a game of football, then I went rockclimbing, thinking I had just bruised myself. I was pulling a big lockoff move on an overhang, and my broken ribs went crack... Then they scraped against each other... Oww. That wasn't enough of a hint though. I went skiing the next week and stacked it hardcore. On my right side of course.

i guess my only claim to fame in younger years (betting back alcohol stories) was the remarkable volume and fluorescent nature of bile i could produce!!

oh and the number of bones i have broken (skull, sternum, fingers, thumbs, face, skull etc) but never broken a major limb.. well not mine anyway....

Stayed awake for 31 hours. Included a night out, lots of xobox and quite a few no-doz + red bull.

Seriously tho, i dont rcommend anyone trying this feat seeing as it took me 3 days of on and off sleeping to get back in to the scheme of things.

Thats nothing, used to do 40+ hours regularly. Once stayed up for 5 days, that really messes you up.
