back in '86 i went on work experience through school, the job was prity good (junior storeman, got to do whippies in a forklift... Rolling Eyes ).
anyways i worked hard enough that i managed to get a offerd and took a part time job there in school holidays and ended up leaving school to work there full time. by early '87 i saved enough to buy my 1st car (yeehaaa, go the cortina Razz ), when i look back it might not of been exactly what i wanted, but it was mine and i could drive on the road.

also i only had to have my P's for a year.. haha suckers.... Laughing

i did spend a lot of time sitting outside the classroom back when i was at school. Laughing
but i did make it to the end of year 11 (1986). and in WA (not sure if it's changed now?) you got your L's at 16 9months and P's at 17 and only had to have your P's for 1 year before going to your opens. Wink

my 1st car (when i was 16) was funded by my folks, except all mods were coming from my pocket (fair enough Razz ). Then dad managed to write if off after driving it for a little bit Crying or Very Sad

Onto my 2nd car now at 19, and fund everything myself, sucks but thats the way it is Very Happy

Just work your arse off (especially in the holidays) and you'll get there sooner than later. When i was in year 12, i didnt have holidays coz of work and managed to save up a bit Very Happy

Funded my first car through a tax return, remember not earning much money while you are at school means that the first $6000 of your pay is tax free, but you are still usually charged @ 30%, so when it comes to tax time you can usually get $2-3K back. My $2K I'd been saving plus my $3K got me my dream TA23 GT on my L's & P's.

I'll just also say it's better to wait to get exactly what you want rather than settling for something that's easy to get. If you get what you really want(and it may involve 6 months extra of saving) you'll enjoy it alot more!

Good luck mate.

OMG, you are all such spring chickens!!

yar work hard, be nice to your mother all those things Wink

don't get so worried abotu a car... any old dhitbox for the cost of rego (like $800) will get you around the place.. yu can buy a new car every year (for rego cost Razz ) and still not be worse off.... unless they break...

i think if you want a project car, get a shitter to drive around first, otherwise when you have to take your project off the road all the time, it will be rather frustrating....

and just remember that project take time.. and the later you finish, the more you will have learned, and the better the project will be Wink

perhaps....

Yeah what happened to the members ride thread you were gonna start.
Heffa just buy a shitter to run around in while your at school and the first year or two out. And wait for the car of your dreams to become available.
I have had the rona for just over two years now, whilst at school i couldn't save much whilst having it but it allowed me to get around. Since starting fulltime work this year i opened an investment account and every month as soon as i get paid i put in about half my wage and it stays there.
In just over 6 months i have saved half of what i want to have as a deposit for a new car. Or enough to buy a very good RA/TA celica if i wanted to.
Just be patient and wait and also don't buy the first one you look at unless it is in tip top shape, nothing worse than having a great car that doesn't move.

Buy a shitter for $500-$600 with long rego and just learn to drive by yourself. Hopefully its an absolute slow POS and you can take it on dirt roads. If you get a few bumps on the car you aren't going to be too worried about it.
Plus driving on dirt trails is soooo much fun.

My first car was a VK Commodore. It was a great car unitl I blew the con rod, then after rebuild blew the head gasket. The imortant thing to remember is that Commodores are shit. Smile So you don't car all to much when things hit them, Like trucks and people in car parks.
After a bit the commodore was stolen, so I bought a car that nobody would steal an NA Fairlane, just sold it last week.
I bought a 2003 Corolla 2 years ago, brand new. Buying a brand new car is good. Smile
Before we were married we bought an 87 Camery Ultima, but have moved on to a 2000 model Hyundai Exel.
And I am buying a GT4 Tomorrow.
So all up I have spent about $50000 on cars over the 7 odd years I have been driving. Thats not mention the cost of maintaing them etc. Damn thats alot of money.
