5MGE/6MGE Differences Thu, 25 August 2005 09:54 Go to next message
Hi, another silly question: I have two engines with my Supra, both blocks are not numbered and have no identifying marks, apart from one has a '2' cast in it and the other has a '4'. I have taken the sump off both to have a look this week. One is definately a standard 5MGE, and it has 2M cast on the crank. The other is definately not standard, and has 6M cast on the crank. My assumption is that this is a 6MGE crank, however I was told at one stage that you can't put a 6MGE crank into a 5MGE block as the crank throw is too wide for the block. Questions then: what dimensions are different in the two blocks? And is my assumption that 2M is a standard 5ME/5MGE crank and 6M is a 6MGE crank valid?

2M is standard 5M crank.

You can put 6M crnak in 5M, but you need to machine block, and use other 6M bits (front oil seal is not the 5M part, nor is cover)

Block number usually stamped with 6Mxxxxxx

Pistons are same as early 5MGE (8.8c/r)
Rods are different.

Cover behind crank pulley (alloy cover) is stamped 6M

Intake plenum has 3000 instead of EFI.

No other differences between late 5MGE and 6MGE.

Thanks for the info, but as I said this block has no markings, so can't tell by that. Has 5MGE intake manifolding, pistons are forged Arias and rods are Carillos so can't look at those and tell size etc without tearing motor down. Block has no machining inside. Was after a dimensional difference between 5MGE and 6MGE blocks if they are different so I can measure the one with the 6M crank and see what it is.

Regards,

JA

Blocks are externally identical bar the engine number.

If one has a 6M crank, then that one is a 6M.
