Check the spark plug leads, if they are original, they will have a date on them. The date will be very close to the date the engine was built.

is there any way i can find out for sure what year it was made?
if it is pre 1989 there is no point me buying it as DOT wont let me fit it to my truck!

there is no way to tell from the engine number.
theres not that many, if any changes in the 7mtge so what does it matter? just tell em its from a 90 ma70. no way they can argue otherwise.

All 7M's used the same emissions gear, therefore regardless of year it will be legal in your car.

just find out when the last 7m went into a car and use that date.
