I wasn't aware that the MA70 needed a booster/converter for it to work, you should just be able to hook up your tacho output on the ECU to the tacho wire for the dash.

You can either source a JZA70 dash or use one of Grant's tacho boosters.

Does it require a booster though? I thought the Mk3's already ran off the 5V signal like the 1JZ tacho pin puts out? My 1GGTE from a Mk3 did, and I thought 7M's did too.

What's wrong with the tacho wire on the igniter? It's one of the wires on the smaller plug, can't remember the colour from the top of my noggin.

I always got the impression that the tacho wire is black. It has been in most cases that i've seen... black, or yellow!!
Wait, toyota wiring never tells the truth

Does anyone want to admit to ever working not only on a Pom car, but anything European?

ive done both a 7mgte and a 1jz into an ma70
and both times ive had to use a tacho booster
the ones i use for a 1j into a cressida should work on a ma70
just trace the ig- wire from the diag box to inside the car

Driften ZZE123, was the car originally a 7MGE or a 7MGTE?

if the engine has a single coil
just get the tacho wire and wire up to the neg side of the coil
this is the strongest signal u can find on the engine for the tacho
if the tacho still jumps around there might be other probs
tacho boosters are usually needed for when goin from a single coil to multiple coils and the signal from 1 coil is not accurate so u have to run it from igniter which has weak signal

Or you are trying to run a 1GGTE which although having 1 coil has a f'ed up setup to match the 7MGTE.

Thanx Sideshow, yes it used to be single coil, now to an engine with a coil on each spark plug. But the wiring loom that was already made up must already be getting a signal form the ECU, a weak one by the sounds of it.
