W58 or R154??

Hey guys I was just wondering what gearbox I should use for my next drift car.
I am building another KE70 and need a gearbox that can handle 500hp. I'm not sure if W58's can handle that? and I've heard that R154's are a bit fragile?
Thanks for any imput. I'd prefer the W58 if it can handle it.

A W58 *might* be able to handle it because your car is fairly light (I'm assuming the KE70) and not *hugely* torquey (I'm assuming 1G here).
That said, you'd have to keep fresh oil in it, and you'd need a modicum of mechanical sympathy if it was to last behind that much power.

I've seen R154's snap with alot less power than what alot of W58's have put through them. Also finding a 1G to R154 bellhousing may be a problem. Correct me if I'm wrong on this one guy's but I can't recall any 1G having an R154 behind it from the factory.

hey it's not going to be a 1G or SR or anything under 2 litres... and no it's not going to be a 1JZ or any 6 cylinder.
any ideas? haha
but yeah it will have a fair bit of torque to it

go w58 because you are going to get very little of the power to the ground straight away with a ke70.

3RZFE. Actually, the size of the wheels isn't going to be a HUGE factor because it doesn't weigh enough to really use the tyres

this i know, read above "or anything under 2 litres". Under therefor should not rule out the 2 litre class, and hence 3sgte possibility.

Don't tacoma truck 4/6cyls already have a solid W gbox behind it ?
Probably only need forged pistons on prepped stock rods, in an otherwise stock motor.... so thats the path I'd go.
I'm sure it'll make enough torque to frighten you in that lightweight
I'm actually looking into the 3.4L tacoma v6, for a swap into an ae86. Full street car. Luv the smoothness. Will put down over 450 ft-lbs tq to the threads on pump gas!!... stock motor, stock ecu, t4 turbo.
Drivetrains are cheap. Just gotta see how "well" it'll fit

there is a frail part in the r154 called the 1st gear thrust washer. Replace this with a case hardened unit such as mine which cost $80, and you are away. The gears in them look like diff gears - fucking massive! i have one behind my worked ford v8...will remain to be seen as to how it likes launches and bottom end torque

A brisbane based ford mustang importer who also does big blocks purchased an ex 7m r154 off me.He said he has used them behind big V8,s with good results [relevant to their cost]
Blakes advice on the thrust washer is a definite if you plan to shock load the box.[we know you will]

R154 it is.
Thanks for everyones imput.
monkey: yes the rear will be tubbed for 17x10's. 2 reasons, firstly there are way more performance tyre sizes available in 17's than just 205/55R15's. secondly, more second hand performance tyres in 17" as well.
