Aside from the fact they're both 6-speeds with integrated bellhousings, there isn't much alike between them. The J160 is an Aisan box, pretty much the same size and strength (although this is questionable) as a W58. The V160/161 is made by Getrag and is a HUGE mother of a box.

IIRC the is200 uses the same box as the s15 200sx. In which case I have seen one of these die with 205rwkw in a 200sx. So IMO they can't handle that much torque. Definitely not as much as a v160.

Hi Mate, I drive a JZA80 with a V161, I have to say this is a smooth as box, with an acurate and very short shift, it makes driving a breeze and feels rock solid. Here's the gear ratio's for you, can't help with a comparison, but hope these numbers help you out.

Gearbox 6 Speed (V160) / (V161)
First 3.827 / 3.724
Second 2.360 / 2.246
Third 1.685 / 1.541
Fourth 1.312 / 1.205
Fifth 1.000 / 1.000
Sixth 0.793 / 0.818
Reverse 3.280 / 3.192
Final Drive 3.266(all TT) / 3.769(NA)

I have the IS200, which had the 6 speed, it was no where near as tight as a w58 or v160, very loose, and is not as strong as a 58

V160 will weigh 55 kg. J160 will not.

On the contrary, everyone I've spoken to has raved about how nice the J160 is to use. Who said it's not as strong either, how can you quantify that? Sure, someone broke it with *only* 200rwkw, but plenty of people have done the same to W58's.

I think the torque, is the main killer for gearboxes. A 1J produces alot more torque than the 1GFE, reasons for swapping to a w58. Having that said, I havnt heard of any breaking, even with the Altezza drift club in Japan, most blow the diff before the box.

For sure, I mean I wouldn't put the J160 in the same league as the V160, but nor would I put the W58 either. Both will have a lifespan dependent on how they're treated.

Ah well, it's a pipe dream as I'd never have the money lying around for a swap Razz
